so after a recent lesson and loads of range balls the ball striking has improved immensely but for the love of me my 17 deg 3w is my nemesis.

I am obviously trying to hit like a hybrid or is it just down to the fact they are harder to hit full stop. This is off a mat btw, off the tee I am fine.

Anyone else suffer the same issue? debating getting a 16.5 or adjustable hybrid and dropping the 3w

I am not a great 3W player and rarely go for a green in two with it unless there is no danger in a half mile radius either side of the green. I think the mat is compounding the issue as the club will skid. If you can hit a 5 wood successfully I would argue a man of your calibre (and despite advancing age) can hit a 3 wood without resorting to a different bat

half of it is confidence I think, just dont feel right with that longer shaft and bigger head in my hand,. I reckon I could hit a 12 degree hybrid further than driver yet its a smaller surface area to hit with lol.

I think a 3 wood with such high loft is a non starter..3 wood ideally around 15 degrees for mere mortals,stick a hybrid iron replacement in the bag..Driver, 3 wood(not h/l)..and hybrid,..4 hybrids does seem a lot//

Like you've said Gibbo, the long shaft on the RBZ probably doesn't help! Do you choke down on the grip? 5 wood my man! Have carried one for sometime now, easy to launch and a little shorter than a 3W. If you don't like big heads, get a small headed version, confidence is a big thing. V-Steel baby!

when I nail it then it goes miles but 1 in 5 isnt good :)

I am thinking another hybrid tbh. we shall see

watching a 18.5 Stage 2 tour adjustable to 17 on ebay for 42 quid so v tempting

low lofted hybrids are not very forgiving. I have a 16 degree adams a12 pro and 15.5 adams super hybrid. neither are very forging but go like the clappers when hit well.

1 in 5 isn't a bad stat for hitting a 3 wood well. Do not forget they aren't far off the loft and length of a driver. Personally I wouldn't bother with the 3 wood off the deck. If a par 5 is long enough for a drive 3 wood then it's a lay up for me and two putts.

17 Degree 3W is a (Strong) 5W in my book!

Don't bother with it off the deck. The Hybrids you already have are fine for that - would not be surprised if 4H is the most used/favourite.

But the Wood should be fine off the Tee (as long as it's teed lowish).

1 in 5 isn't a bad stat for hitting a 3 wood well.

Indeed. It's a Rubbish one!

5h is my goto as goes approx 180-200 depending on conditions. 4h I admit is a tad harder to muller :)

I may even be sorted after my 6 month of lessons I am undertaking and be of single figures and smashing everything :D (dont hold your breath)

If you hit a 5h that distance you appear to have a lot of other gear down to driver..Are you hitting 300yard drives?

if you are getting that kind of distance then you do not need a 3 wood. it will cost you more shots in the long run. trust me! ive been there!

I only have a 3 wood in the bag at the minute on trial. they are long clubs, if you don't have them under control then they leak shots.

a 5 wood will be plenty of distance and a lot easier to launch.

A 17° 3 wood has to be easier to hit than a 15° one, it just has to be.
I would be very surprised if the majority of golfers get a significant distance gap between a 3 wood and a 5 wood, mostly there's 3° between them - what's that? About 10 yards? If hit well…..
Don't forget we're talking about average golfers, not low single figure players who make 8 or 9 out 10 3 wood shots.
I suspect more players will hit a 17° wood further than a 15°...

no I dont hit 300yd drives, I have done but only in perfick conditions and a slight breeze behind :)
(I have had around 280+ over a round tho)

As a crap driver I tend to slice atm so am around the 240-250 mark. my 3w is for 220 plus on par 5's, I am happy to lay up but know I can hit a belter from time to time. Maybe I just need to acknowledge my level of ability and drop the 3w and just lay up :)
