My Club allows fees to be paid by monthly standing order, but they have to be paid one year in advance. This means that anyone who wants to join the Club has to pay the joining fee + the annual subscription + the standing order for the following year. I'm not surprised that we're having difficulty attracting new members. Any comments?

No. We have a payment plan in place that must be paid by August, it costs an extra £10. If the full amount is paid by April then the £10 charge is dropped, some members have started paying already.

Forgot to add, we can pay by DD as a one off payment of call in the golf club and pay by cash or cheque

Someone's really thought that one out haven't they......

We can pay by DD each month at no extra cost but we have to agree to pay the whole year should we leave before the end.
Some do it as almost a rolling monthly membership so you can stop anytime you like...
Many go through a credit company and it ends up costing you 5-10% more....quite a big chunk if you're already paying £1000+...

This is how ours works

Ours do Fairway Credit on a monthly basis but you are committed to the whole year and there is a % added for credit

I prefer to pay in full day one, my first round afterwards costs £1,000+ and all the following games are free!

Full payment by January (cheque, cash or credit card) or standing order but this costs more over the year.

Only a small course and membership where I am so no joining fee either.

I pay by 'fairway credit', think that is what it is called. You do pay a bit of interest but very small. Makes renewals much less painful.

Ouch!

My old place used to do that in the dim and distant past... something to do with needing a credit licence if they let you pay monthly in the same year. Lots of clubs use Fairway Credit now - two benefits, they get the money up front from FC, and then they don't need a credit licence because the arrangement is between you and the finance company.

Lots of club constitutions don't allow arrears hence no paying up plan although some allow a finance option which costs a little in interest. It's jnserstandable from a business perspective and a requirement for guaranteed cash flow

I pay by fairway credit as well, pay a little extra than if you pay it up front but I prefer to pay it monthly as I'm rubbish at saving money.

My club takes payment by DD. Club do the work themselves and do the DD run with no middleman or no finance house involved. Ideal solution. Surprised more clubs don't do it this way.

We were using Fairway Credit but did away with it several years ago. The options left are paying all up front (subs due 1st March) by cheque or credit card OR you can pay half up front and the remainder by the end of May. Hardly a huge grace period but I guess it does help spread the costs a little.
