Can you drop on the green (far) side of a water hazard.

Recently on TV I saw Bubba hit a shot over a water hazard. It landed on the slope past the water hazard boundary but rolled back into the hazard.

He got a rules official and he dropped the ball on the green side of the hazard.

I can't seem to find a rule that allows this. Is this allowed at all or was this just a special local rule in play for that comp?

i can't remember if he dropped to the side ensuring that he was not nearer the hole from where his ball last crossed the hazard.

Thanks!

I believe it went over the hazard - landed and then went back into the hazard and dropped the ball where the ball crossed the hazard line

It must have been a lateral water hazard and he dropped under Rule 26-1c.

It was...and as you suggest he applied 26-1c and dropped the ball within 2cl of the point the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard, no nearer the hole and not in the hazard.

It may well have been directly in front of the green. Much depends on the size, shape and alignment of the water hazard. For example, if the hazard in the diagram below is defined as a water hazard, a ball played from A which lands on the bank of the hazard at B and rolls back into it at C would have to be dropped anywhere along the red line starting from D and extending indefinitely or at A. If that were considered unreasonable, the hazard could be defined as a lateral water hazard.

I see from yesterday’s diagram that the pond had migrated northwards. This is more accurate.

Ok, thanks.

Strange that it was lateral as it seemed to be directly in front of the green.

Part of the issue is perspective! If it's the one I was thinking about its more to the right of the green for more mortals coming in from the fairway having played up - for these players they are firing straight at it from different angles.

However, the real issue is more to do with the relationship between the various flag positions and the margins when considering where a player would have to drop under 26 - 1b. There should be an option available other than replaying the shot, which would have been the only option as I saw the layout. The other side of the hazard from where his ball last crossed could have been miles away.
