Was googling up some kit. Got some links to the lovely WRX forum. After a few clicks, came upon this gem from someone reviewing the Garmin G6 GPS (Italics & Bold by me)..

Garmin Approach G6. Ok I normally don't post but here is my two cents. I have been playing for a long time and currently I am a 12 handicap, 58 years old. Clubs: Ping BECU eye2 + irons, G5 driver, 3 wood Tour Edge CB2, Tour Edge Trilogy Hybrids 3 & 4. Here was my problem. I kept thinking that I was still in my late 20’s. Back then I had a nickname of “Short Knocker” because I could only hit the ball about 280-290. My friends could hit it about 290+. Heck, I was only 5’7” and 140 lbs. I would literally grunt when I hit the ball. So what’s the point? Well I went out yesterday, the first time I used the Garmin, and one of the best features of the Garmin is the ability to find and enter distances for each club. So, I did that. The course was empty so I hit three or four shots with each club. What a revelation! I am friggin’ old. My average drive is now about 240. Other clubs were equally as short. No wonder I kept coming up short!

.. I would not mind being called a short knocker for a 285y drives. What planet are the WRX boys on? I need to snort some of their stuff..

PS: If I had a knickname of a 'short knocker' it might have implied something completely different in the locker room..

The guy is 58 so it's 30 years since he was in his 20's which means he was hitting 280 yards with wooden woods and balata balls.

Hmmm.....dream on sunshine.

WRX is full of guys who say they drive 300+ and play off 12-15 index, which equates to about 15-18 over here!

It can be a good reference source though. Tom Wishon is a contributor and he and Barney Adams write for their weekly email.

I still occasionally miss the BigHitter and DTown (or is that DClown) days of BombSquadGolf! Even still have a BSG built Tour (reject) Driver - complete with uncleaned-up epoxy mess! B/S of the highest (or is that longest, or lowest) quality!

Same as on here some times and people are often longer in their mind than in reality. Some very long hitters on here and I'm not having a pop at anyone. It seems funny on the WRX that there are a lot of "bombers" hitting 280-300 yards off 12ish handicaps. I wonder if they mean 300 yards, not necessarily on the fairway

but remember their forum is huge compared to this one- plus we have predominantly mid h/cap and above and older golfers. They have many plus players, fitters, a few elite, a few sponsors and college players, as well as the deluded. Some also play in 25-20 degree heat so its not unusual. Even we can do 290yds on a hot Texas fairway.

Game Golf has taught me i'm not as long as I thought i was, I may have to rename Game Golf the wife as she says a similar thing
