Hi, I know this is a very newbie question and I apologise in advance! But I'm looking at buying a set of clubs online cheap (I'm a student!) and then getting them fitted as I'm only a mini person (5ft 6-7). Is this possible or when you get fitted do they specail order in your requirements or something. Also, as I sort of side question... I'm looking at the ci7, di7/9, mx900 or macgregor mt os (any suggestions? are the ci7s forgiving enough etc). I haven't actualy got a handicap yet but I have shot as 16 over twice but can sometimes hit about 25-30 on a bad day, so I'm no pro! But I don't want to be lumbered with a set of clubs that look similar to a array of small shovels if I do get any better! Thanks for your time and sorry for the newbie question!

You can have clubs fitted after purchase, simply take them to a club fitter. That said, I would suggest that this would eat up any saving that you made buying online.

I think Ping are the only company that will fit existing clubs for free.

Yes you can get tailored after buying (imagine getting them customosed then not paying for them! haha)
Really though, you dont want to be buying cheaper range irons and getting them fitted as it defeats the purpose of cheaper irons. Look for clubs that are aimed at the mid handicap region, even if they are second hand, get them fitted instead.

Wait a week or two until the new Di9 irons are in the store and get a set of Di9 at a bargain price, great clubs and can be custom fitted. Will suit your game fine and dont look big and ugly.

Most big retailers will price match online prices, so get them from AG or NB etc, and then get them c/f'd at the same time. This will be cheaper in the long run, and easier.

If you buy online, you may not get the right flex shafts for you, and these are expensive to change.

Sometimes places like direct golf will do a free check on your fitting requirements & check lofts & lie of clubs, any chanes of course will have to be paid for.

If you are really cheaky you could go & get a free fitting & then look for something with those specs online, instead of buying those irons, its another option, though if you do this I'd also say, give the retailer some additional buisiness to re-emberse them for their time.

If I had to recommend looking at budget to mid price irons that might grow with your game you could do worse than looking at MD, or John Letters, or even Adams, then you will be able to get brand new fitted at the right price & reasonable quality with some of the nicer irons & when you start looking at putters & wedges I'd be recommending MD NV Drew as an avenue of first port of call.

Good quality Yonex irons for instance, can also be found for incereaingly reasonable prices especially when looking at the previous years model.

Most of the bigger retailers AG, Nevada Bobs etc will do a basic custom fitting programme (some charge so be careful although it is offset against the cost of the irons) so you should be able to get them done pretty easily. As already mentioned you could be cheeky and go thorugh the process (assuming it is a free session) and then take the information away and shop around online.

Most club pros will give you a more thorough fitting and will try where possible to offer you the best deals they can bearing in mind they don't have the same buying power. One advantage of using a good pro and building up a rapprt is that if you go back for lessons etc you normally get a discount or longer time as a concession for previous purchases. My pro is exceptionally good at knocking a few quid of mst things I buy and will often give me a free 5 minute swing check if he sees me on the practice ground as I buy a lot through him.

If possible go for quality over cheapness. What you pay for initially you will recoup with a more playable club that will last longer and will have some element of part exchange value left whereas a cheaper set won't be worth anything at a later date.

If you want the best of both worlds, try and find a direct golf shop. They always have bargain sets and won't charge you much to C_F.

If you buy a cheap set online and the take them somewhere, it'll cost you more in the long run.

Thanks alot for the answers, my nearest AG or NB is a few hours away unfortunately... (I live in north wales), but I think I'll head over one day, my club is on the wilson site as a dealer but they don't keep any irons at all (except for used ones) instock so I'm guessing I'll be paying close to RRP. Also, anyone tried any of the irons aforementioned. I've bought some impact tape off ebay, in the hope to see I don't need any adjustements but if I do I guess I'll bite the bullet and go for it!
Thanks again

nicksampo.........get over here (come via mine if you like) and go to DG in Walsall.
If you drive, even Anglessey - Walsall can be done on a day trip. You could save loads more than your petrol/train fare.
Where are you anyway (not the exact street of course!!).
Sounds like an area I would know well, living close to the border in Shrops.

Nick, there's a direct golf in the IWrral, is that not near you?

Also, find out what price the big guys will sell for, then go and see your local pro. I got custom fitted MX25s at the start of the season, for the same price as I could get anywhere online or at AG where they had a deal on.

Told the pro I would give him my business as long as he fitted them and matched the AG price, which he did. He even managed to swap my 3 iron for a Mizuno hybrid which isn;t the norm for Mizuno.

I live near Porthmadog, I've got the year to earn money, to help pay for uni (bristol).. however golf is getting in the way of saving up my hard earned cash lol I think I'm gonna head over to the AG in telford one day, only 2 hours and I know the drive well. Wirral is actually the same distacnce away really, but if AG fails I'll head there. Thanks for the replies, and this forum is so much better than the dead TG one!
