It's not that important, but I was just wondering about distances with my clubs and have these facts.

There are 10yd gaps between my irons. Each iron is progressively more lofted and has a shorter shaft to account for the difference.

There are 15yd gaps between my wedges. Each wedge differs from the next by the same amount as my irons, but the shafts are the same length.

I use the same full swing all the way through my irons and wedges, so why are the wedge gaps bigger than the iron gaps given that the changes in loft are the same (plus the wedge shafts don't get shorter)?

I'd noticed this 'anomoly' years ago - and figured that at some point (between 9 and PW in my case) the same difference in loft has a greater effect when the club is 'flatter' (PW and higher lofted wedges) than in more upright clubs (9,8 etc). That was certainly verified when I hit a 73* Super-Lob Wedge 45 yards max - though the ball travelled over 150!

It is related to spin, if you are putting exactly the same swing on, strangely my gaps from 52 deg 56deg to 60 degs are roughly 10 yards for my bread a butter half swing. The full swing is a different matter, I don't really know with my 60 degree, because I rarely go full out but I think it's around 80 yards 75% shot is 70 yards. If I am looking at 100 yards you would think the 52 would fit but I cannot get it out to 100 or over ... So I play a knock down PW instead.
I think it's just knowing the swing that you can repeat and then selecting wedges that give you those gaps ... I am happy with mine as I know the 75% power and 1/2 swing distance for all of them and the full power stuff I am not so bothered as I will use other stuff in my bag or lay up to one of my known distance windows.

Sounds like spin is the answer.

As harpo said above, I also have 10yd gaps with half and three quarter swings with wedges which adds weight to the spin idea.

I don't mind manufacturing distances with GW down, but I hate the gap between my GW and PW. I do my best to not leave them but sometimes it just happens and there's nowt you can do about it.

I have a similar gapping issue between my pa and my 50. They are 3 degrees different, but about 20 yards apart.
