Hello all,

Pretty new to the game and I struggle a bit with the terminology.

What does it mean when you develop "the yips"?

What does it mean to "lay up for a shot"?

What is the stableford points system? I usually just count the amout of strokes it take me to get from tee to hole. Is this correct?

What does it mean when you "open & close your stance"?

If I join a club, does my membership fee mean I can play all the time or do I pay my membership and then have to pay to play a round on top of that?

Thanks!!!

The yips is a golfing 'disease' caused by making the same stroke. For instance putting. It makes your swing short and jittery.

A lay up shot is were you hit the ball into a position where you know you can hit the green with ease. This can happen on a par 5 for instance when you have a 170yard shot to the green but decide to lay it up 40 yards from the green for an easy chip.

The stableford system is where you get your handicap say 18 for example and then for a bogey with your handicap you get 1 pt for a par 2pts for birdie 3pts and eagle 4pts this makes the game fairer.

When you open your stance it means that your front foot moves away from the ball so more of your chest is facing the green and to close your stance is the opposite.

And last of all your membership fee is added ontop of the fee to play the rounds for instance if it costs you £400 to play for a year and £350 for membership then thats £750 however you never need to pay again for that round and the membership fee is then removed for your next year.

Hope that helps.

re membership fees
Now many clubs offer different membership packages so that you still make two payments (joining fee + annual fee) but the annual fee is reduced and there is a charge for each round on top. This is to help out people who can only play a limited number of times in a year and may not get full value out of a conventional membership (or who don't want a big payment up front). always check the fullrange of membership packages.
