My course is in winter mode, 9 hole competitions, non-qualifiers, tees forward, terrible greens and lift clean & place. In the last 2 weeks, the Saturday competition has been won with 25 points both times, meaning I would have to go round at 2 under for 9 holes, which is difficult considering putting is a guessing game. I don't know how someone of 5 even has a chance at all.

I won a 9 hole comp last weekend with 22 points - so the answer is yes

I would say yes. My best 9 holes is 6 under gross, 9 under nett = 27pts. I've been 5 under for 9 holes on a number of occasions. But I'm a bandit off 5...:ears:

Was this putting on greens that you just hit the ball and hope it holds its line?I assume not.

So you're less skillful at reading uneven surfaces than high handicappers...?
They don't have to make birdies and make no mistakes, do they? How is it possible to read a putt on frozen greens that are covered in spike marks and pitch marks, If I have 1 bad hole, that's that.

Rarely see frost on a links course, and can't remember the last time I played on temps...

What handicap's do you play off (7/8ths) ? Are a lot of your low stroke index holes on the back 9 ?

Nothing like positive thinking. Its winter golf. Go out and enjoy it. Try some stuff out and just keep the swing ticking over until the new season and you go back to 18

Having played ur place only last week i'd have to agree that uve no chance as ur greens really arent great although course is still dry enuff the greens are unreadable! Only my opinion.

This.

I don't think that I have a self defeating attitude going out, as I have finished in the top 5 both weeks that we have had 9 holes comps and am coming off a very good season (9 top 10's, no wins, two seconds). Handicaps are rounded up to even number, so I get shots at 5 lowest SI holes on both 9's (one week we play front, next week back), I feel this system is unfair.

Off 9 I don't see why you can't knock it round the front 9 in level par every now and again.

My last two rounds with a 15 h/capper he's done exactly that both times!!! :p

My h/cap is now 7 and I've shot 2 under par a few times round my front 9 this year.

I went round in 1 over on Saturday (2 bogeys, 1 birdie), and was 3 points of the lead...

I'd be happy with that and go home pleased. 1 over for 9 holes off a 9 h/cap is a good days work.

There's always going to be someone who plays out of their skin (especially for only 9 holes).... one day you might make 3 more birdies whilst the others miss. All you can do is golf your own ball.

Despite previously getting to a 1 h/cap I've never won a comp,..... ever..... there's always someone who comes in with something stupid like 46pts.
