Dear Golfers,
Please can anyone help me with this. Our Golf Pro wishes to become the President of our club as the present one is leaving. All the members know he will be perfect for the job but is it allowed that a non member,Pro becomes president.
My thoughts are he would first need to join as a full member before the voting for a new President takes place.
I have mentioned this to him and he says if he now pays the full membership, and then doesn't get elected, he wouldn't want to stay at the club as a member.
s this the risk he has to take. Any help much appreciated.Thank you

Not knowing the constitution of your club, and what executive powers the President might hold if it isn't a ceremonial position, its impossible to say whether or not its right at your club. However, he won't be the first pro that has been club President or Captain. If its permitted, its then down to your members to agree.

Should be written in your club constitution somewhere - at our club the role is honorary and though the last three presidents have been members the previous one was not.

Our old pro became president and Captain of the club in the time he was there and he didn't have to join.

It depends on your Constitution, Rules and definition of the role. If it's an "active" role I would suggest that there would be the possibility of a conflict of interest. If it's ceremonial then there would probably be no issue, though if it's only a figurehead I should imagine there are a number of longstanding members who fit the bill better, unless the pro has been there for ages.
I guess it's a sign of the times that there are a lack of members wanting to fulfil these roles nowadays. If there was a choice though, as a member I would be asking myself "would I rather have someone who has been a member for a long time and supported the club with their subscriptions, or would I prefer someone who has made their living from the club?"

Is it an active or ceremonial role? Refer to the club constitution but is it likely that anyone else will want to stand, especially if it's made widely known the pro is up for nomination. If not, get him to join and then let him do it

Thanks Guys for all the info.i have just heard that the whole of the committee have resigned. So the club need a president, vice president, manager and captain. The Pro says he will choose the committee himself if he gets appointed. Not sure if its that simple

WHy have they resigned? Is it a protest over the pro getting the role. If so you have to question how far this could ripple out. Could it begin to affect membership numbers if others decide they don't want to renew their membership?

Now, that is serious.
Is it a members club? If so and depending on how your club is set up, you could have a business without management in place. If it's a proprietary club (owned by a person, partnership or company who sell membership to the members, but retains ownership of the club, land and assets themselves) then it's not so serious but still not good for the club itself. I would be checking if I were you.
Clearly something has gone badly wrong in the background and a resolution needs to be found and quickly. I wouldn't rule out finding another club TBH.
Again, you need to check the club rules. I doubt very much if the President can select his own committee. In any case it certainly seems the President's role is much more than ceremonial.
Considering the situation with the Committee, the pro may well be worried for his job. More info needed and if I were you I'd be asking, if there is anyone left to ask.

Hello All,
latest info concerning our great golf pro becoming President. The Pro was told that before the voting he would have to become a member of the golf club otherwise he would not be voted for.So he sent his application to become member. He also informed the members he wants to become the President. From all the members he contacted, the response he received was overwhelming with a large majority saying they will vote for him.Today he has received an email saying the present president and committee [ who are all retiring this week] have refused his application to be a member....
Voting is Saturday and if anyone can offer advice would be great.thanks all

Does the vote for the President have to happen on the night. If not, vote in a new committee as the old ones are retiring. Defer the President vote. New committee accept the application at their first meeting, arrange for an EGM where the vote for President takes place. Sorted.
