Well that's a new one on me, is it part of some secret ploy by the USGA to make the greens even harder to find? ;)

Chambers Bay greens look awful on telly although they appear to rolling fine.

I thought that when I saw the vid of Bubba holing that putt the other day....
Maybe they should do an "Augusta" and spray them green.....

Yes they look pretty bad and some are a bit bumpy too apparently which really surprises me for a Major. But notwithstanding that the views are to die for.

I know that's not why they're all there, but still...

Phowarr! Eh? Eh? Know whatta mean Squire? Say no more!!

I'm a "Greenkeeper" by trade and would be ashamed to put my name to those greens, on a serious note though I really don't know what some golfers expect of us "Greenies" sometimes, we work our bollox off to get the course up to scratch and they still/always want more !...

Perfection for a pittance! Of course :)

Yep, and there's only four of us for a touch over 100 acres of cut grass, our neighbouring course is 190 acres a fair bit of which is set aside and there's 8 of them and they've got 2 of everything !...

I heard Denis Pugh say a few days ago that they would be "Browns" not greens and that is what all links courses would be like in the height of summer here, if they weren't watered

I like that they are different and wild looking. It suits the style of the course. They may look patchy and speckled on tv but bet they are rolling better than Wentworth's effort a few weeks back.

They looked a bit slow to me, but then what do I know.

I would find it hard to get a good read on greens like that. I would find the subtle breaks would all be hidden by the colour changes.

The Wentworth greens looked fantastic compared to these. Some of the close up shots revealed just how bad they are. reminds me of Collingtree Park years ago. At least Monty was honest about it. Its not a case of fine grasses turning brown, here there simply isn't any fine grass on some greens at all.

When I put the open on I couldn't tell where the fairway ended and the green began.

As it should be.........many courses I have played have better grass on their approaches than on the greens.

You putt on the surface not the colour.
Take a look at the scoreboard, how did they manage those scores with 'bad' greens?

They might look different to the greens we're used to seeing, but they're running well. They're a little slow, which the commentators said was due to them watering them before play, but they've actually run pretty well. They've also held the ball well. All the talk in the build-up was that you were going to have to run the ball up to the green, but that's not been the case, plenty of guys managed to get it to stop. I don't think they're that bad at all.

No problem with the fairway merging into the green.

26 players at even or better after the first round so they can't be rolling that bad. Looks aren't everything ;)
