Hi All,

I am moving to Cambridge in a couple of months and am looking to join a golf club. My main criteria are:

- Within 30 minutes drive of Cherry Hinton / Fulbourn.
- The course doesn't suffer too badly in the wet (I am used to a links course with amazing drainage!).
- Decent practice facilities including practice range and chipping green.
- Not too expensive.

Obviously I will probably have to compromise on a few things.

Thanks for your help in advance,

Jack

I think the nearest to you would be Gog Magog which is an excellent facility with 2 course that get great reviews. Practice facilities are very good (had a couple of lessons there) but not played either course yet. Playing the Wandlebury in August in their Mixed Open though. Otherwise there is Girton, Meridian, Menzies and Bourn. I like Bourn and it has decent facilities but can get wet (as can them all I suspect). Meridian and Menzies are a bit bland imho and from memory neither have great practice facilities...

I just saw "not too expensive" so that rules The Gogs out!!

Someone who knows more about the courses mentioned will be along soon :-)

PS: Welcome to The Forum

Newmarket must be one of the most playable courses in the area, generally only closes for snow.
Beautiful turf as well. Might be pricey though.
Trying to remember where Cherry Hinton is, not too far away I think.

I don't know about the new ones but when i played there in the late 1970's the other Cambridshire courses were a bit grim and very wet in the winter.
Excepting The Gogs, Newmarket and Suffolks Royal Worlington.

Gog Magog is a really great course, played there a week or two ago, the old course is tough enough and very interesting with a variety of challenging holes, haven't played the Wendlebury but have heard its long.

Not sure on membership fees or how much 'reasonable' is to you, but certainly the gogs are worth you looking at

My recommendations would be:
Menzies at Bar Hill - Good solid course, slightly hilly, decent drainage.
Bourne - Very nice track IMO, hilly, average drainage.
Girton - Average track, can suffer from rain, but new good practice facilities.

Gogs is approx £1000 a year, plus a £900 joining fee. If you can afford that, go for it no doubt.
