We had Callaway up our club today with the full range of gear. This was great timing because about a month ago I played with a guy who played with a set of Callaway X hot pros and I took a shine to them. He claimed they gave him greater distance and had tighter dispersion than his old set. Perhaps 2 clubs longer than his old set. He was certainly hitting them very well and far!

Anyway I wanted to find out for myself what they were like and I must say the initial results were impressive. The rep had me hitting some shots with my 6I to take a baseline. Then I switched to the 6I X hot iron. I immediately took to them and found them easier to hit. They went further 15yds, 20 yds, and with tighter dispersion. He showed me the charts on the flightscope with 2 concentric circles the smaller one being the X hot irons. I was really impressed with them. I went back and forth to the AP2 from time to time to just even things out a bit but the pattern stayed the same - there was definitely a positive difference with the Callaways. I asked if the loft was just stronger on the Callaway iron but he said no and also pointed at the flightscope, angle (launch?) was 17 degrees on both my 6i and the Callaway.

The club pro was present also and he commented that he saw a great improvement not only on my shots but with himself also. He placed an order on a new set himself before I got there.

Now I am usually sceptical about how much difference a club can make especially as the shaft was the same as the one I use in my current set ,DG S300 . He matched the shaft on purpose to start me off and later I tried others but they weren't anywhere near as good for me. The rep said that I was pretty solid with S300 although my swing speed was at the higher end of the scale for S300 - 88mph on the flightscope.

The most surprising thing was that for some reason I could better feel where the clubhead was at the top of my backswing. Its almost like I could time my swing better with the new iron - more than just coincidence I think?

I explained that I had never been fitted before and he did some further checks. Using tape and a ball marked with a fresh black line I hit a shot. It left an impression on the club. A straight line at right angles to the leading edge which was good (by all accounts) showed that no lie angle adj. was needed. However, the line was a little towards the tow end , he suggested that I should try .5" longer so I did. The results were even better (I'm not making this up by the way). The line moved in towards the centre of the clubface. This change defies my logic that I being only 5ft 10 should have shorter shafts in my clubs rather than the stock shaft length.

Finally I held a club and he checked the grip , he noticed that the fingers of my left hand were digging into my palm. I suspected this for a long time which is why I went to 2 wraps of tape from the usual 1 wrap. However he passed me a mid size which apparently is equivalent to about 8 wraps and it fitted perfectly. I didn't hit any balls with this though as it was only a sawn down shaft.

There is an offer on the table for me. 7 irons and you get 2 wedges free. I think the price of each iron is £80 (TBD), so £560 for a set 5-PW with 2 new Callaway wedges 54 and 58 thrown in. Seems a really good deal.

I am so tempted and I have a couple of days to mull it over.

Deal or No Deal?

Sounds like a deal to me,if you were that impressed.CAllaway don't make bad clubs.Go for it.

Design looks very similar to ap2 but I doubt you could hit anything 15 to 20 yards further without cranked lofts. I believe the ap2 is 35* 7 iron & the xhots are 31*. Although them both launching at the same is strange.

You're probably right, I did ask about the lofts as well and he said that the 6I loft was comparable to the AP2. In any case the flight didn't look that much different only that the Callaway iron went further and straighter and seemed a tad easier to hit. I would like now to repeat this exercise again somewhere and to see if I get similar results. But on the evidence so far the irons are great.

I like my AP2's and I'm not desperately looking to change but I was genuinely impressed with the Callaways today.

It's a very common thing to have stronger lofts on newer irons these days.
The design increases launch angle, it hits the ball higher.
So they have to strengthen the lofts to keep the ball in our atmosphere - thus, they go further.
And they're not as tricky to hit as you think because they launch high. It's win/win really.
My only gripe is the manufacturers boasting about huge distance gains as if there is some special ingredient used.
No, they just launch high so have strong lofts to match the normal launch angle expected...

Good looking club and if they're half as forgiving as their previous incarnation -RAZR-X Tour- they'll be great.
