Callaway Epic Irons review by The Average Golfer

constant obession with "thats a big hit", its supposed to be a 7 iron, it shouldnt be about distance! try hitting to a flag rather than low draws down an aimless range?

I tend to go through cycles of watching me and my golf, crossfield, shiels and finch. Changing person as I get bored of each one.

Having watched that. I have new respect for the ones above zzzzzzzz

I wouldn't dismiss him to early. He's had one club to review, and being a average joe, probably hasn't got the skill set to see how easy it is to play different shots. Hes put some cracking stuff out in the past

There stuff is good as they are honest average golfers, unlike that wee walloper that Shields uses he's been 13 handicap for years.

Its cut throat lol. Only so many hours I can spend at work on YouTube.

Id imagine if I'd see some of crossfields "world is out to get me" rubbish first I'd not have subscribed to him either.

Balls don't launch at the same angle as the loft of the club. 21° is certainly not low.

I was thinking -4* attack angle approx and 27* ish club hence my reply. That's an interesting link though as that logic doesn't seem to be true. Can you explain how it works as far as that link goes? The club reviews on YouTube seem to match loft to launch angle pretty well minus attack angle from what I've seen.

I have no actual knowledge of any facts, only logic - which may or may not be right. Someone like the_coach would know the facts behind it.

I guess it's the combination of angle of attack, shaft lean (delofting the club) and friction between club and ball that means launch angle (apart from driver) doesn't correlate to loft.

Driver reviews all seem to be a touch higher launch than loft, due to hitting the ball after the bottom of the swing, i.e. On the up or close to level.

All the iron data I've ever seen has 6/7 iron around 20°.

I've also seen pitching experts say the ideal launch angle for lowest spinny ones is around 30° and that's with 50°+ wedges.

Just been up the range in Berkhamsted and they have some Epic irons, so I hit a 7 iron against my normal 7 iron.

My 7 iron is about 135 yards, but using range balls, that could reduce, but today I was hitting at some of the fixed targets on the range

In the middle is a large England flag angled on a frame which I lasered at 145 yards.

started hitting my 7 iron and was connecting quite well and the balls coming to a stop about 5-10 yards short of the flag. hit about 15

then changed to the Epic and hit a few, boom hit the flag and bounced over, boom cleared the flag, boom an off centre hit, still went as far as my 7 iron. boom cleared the flag, etc

was consistently getting 5-10 yards further than my current 7 iron

compared the lofts and it does seem that there is a slight difference the epic being slightly more upright. compared the Epic with my 6 iron, which is my 150 yard club and it was clear that the epic was not as upright as my 6 iron

Hit a few with my 6 iron and they were rolling upto the flag but nowhere near the distance of the epic 7 iron.

Conclusion, its a nice club to hit, looks good and certainly cannot complain at the results, but simply not at that pricepoint,

Interestingly they had a Callaway day the other day and 10 people have ordered irons or hybrids

for a club to go further than another club it has to be able to transfer club head speed into more ball speed. considering all the manufacturers push face transfer to the legal edge then i dont see how they can go further.
that would leave launch angle and spin. so imo, if anyone is hitting an epic further then their current irons then they was fitted poorly to begin with or using old tech

If work allows... :) Spend 3 mins on the vid when he buys the irons

i know now he's not for everyone (especially as he uses iron headcovers  ) but this is a better indication of what he's about
