Gents, I have been asked to caddy for a mate in a couple of weeks. I know I'm going to be carrying his bag, cleaning his club and raking bunkers (if he finds one) but what else is involved?

He's not going to need advice, certainly not from me. I'll be trying not to offer an opinion, as our games are so far apart - me giving it "I'd just flick this down there with a 5 iron and see if I can keep it out of trouble" wouldn't be helpful haha!

Grateful for any advice on dress, where to stand, what sort of guff to come out with etc.

Thanks chaps.

Clean the ball when he lifts it on the green. Keep one end of the towel damp and one end dry.
If you pull the flag hold the actual flag (wrap it round the pin) to stop it fluttering and making a noise.
If you have a difference of opinion then voice it despite feeling you are a world apart. Even just "are you sure?" to make him think.

Stand well out of the way on the green (out of sight and line).

That's about it.

And if he wins try and take most of the glory. But then refer to your friend in a slightly racist way in an after dinner speech.

I take it your mate plays off a very low handicap if not better.

I reckon most of it will come naturally to you once you're out but it will brilliant from your perspective to see a very good player up close and personal rather from 30yds behind. May well help your game just watching the set ups and course management.

Enjoy it!

He plays off +3...

It'll either motivate me to practise and see if I can improve, or, more likely, make me sell the weapons of justice and find a hobby I am competent at, haha!

I've got a round with him and a playing partner of his a couple of days before it. Chummy is off scratch. Watching me tonk it round the place will be an eye opener for them!

Thanks for the tips guys, I'm really looking forward to it.

Very simple, ask him what he expects from you

Some players want a mate to chat and give input, some just want club carriers. A quick 2 minute chat as to what role he wants you to play will save any probs occurring mid round

The top caddies have one simple rule. Keep up and shut up.

And 1 more before those 2!

Turn Up!

Ask him if he wants you to read the greens or if he's happy to do his own. Work out what they are anyway, just in case he wants confirmation. It's much better to make the guy feel positive about his decision than have doubt.

Enjoy yourself and try to keep him positive, but don't try to be psychologist.

Trainers are generally the preferred footwear, to avoid damage on the greens.

If the weather is great like at the moment, make sure that your player has plenty of fluid on board

I think that's a given in that part of the world!

Some quality advice, thanks very much!

Foxholer, this will be when I'm back in the UK in a couple of weeks, it's in the North East. Really hoping it doesn't rain, I'll be in shorts and a polo shirt regardless!

Really looking forward to it, different game to the one I've played and seen played up close!
