Caddies

Good question. I don't know but would it also make them quicker or slower?

I have never been lucky enough to play with a caddy. I guess you need to have done so to answer the question. I will go for 4 shots though to get things started.

Suppose it depends on the pro. Some seem to really consult with their caddy and make a joint decision. Others just seem to have them to carry the gear and keep it clean.

Good question.

Everybody likes to think that they know how far they hit each club and that you know best. Last year our scratch team played a 36 hole friendly against the county team. Some of us had caddies and mine was one of our juniors that I had never really spoken to before. On the 16th in the afternoon I wanted to hit gap wedge but he said " you need a wedge as you have been short all day with most of your approach shots". I only went and stiffed it to gimmie range. The look on his face was priceless, he didn't say anything other than good shot but I just knew that he wanted to say "told you so".

He's a good lad too, about 14 and playing off 5/6.

I would say that yes they do save their players a couple of shots per round.

Depends on the player I think, some of them must need their caddies to point them in the right direction to get out of their chuffing front door in the morning!

One of the best things I saw was Cabrera a couple of years back when he got into the play off at the Masters with Scott. He had his lad "caddying" but he was pretty much just carrying the bag and Cabrera was working out all his own yardages etc. was hoping he would win just for that!

On the caddies, my mate said he wants to caddie for me on our April medal as its my birthday, would it bother any of you if one of your playing partners you might not know did this?

Not only do they have all the relevant course data, but they can also help with the more subtle aspects of the round; like giving sound advice, counselling caution or attack in the heat of the moment or simply just keeping their man in the moment.

Don't imagine any specific number can be attached to their input in any given round, but when you consider the longterm partnerships like Seve & Billy Foster or Steve Williams and Tiger, then they must be worth their weight in gold.
