By Election Soon?

Ah, that bastion of unbiased reporting once again.............

It is going to be interesting to see how this develops.

Do you think he should resign and there should be a bye-election.

He was Secretary of State for Scotland and was complicit in a slur on the First Minister of Scotland that directly involved the French Ambassador to the UK. Hardly your run-of-the-mill 'everyone-does-it' back-bench MP politicking.

It was during an election campaign. smoke & mirrors from all sides, truths, half truths and down right lies from all sides. That's the way it is these days. Malcolom Bruce was right in his radio interview yesterday, they're all at it.

In answer to your questions though, No & No

I can't see him resigning, after all he is the only Lib MP in Scotland. If this story were to get a lot of negative coverage for the Libs something may happen, but i just can't see it.

So you think it was OK to lie then - and to cause embarrassment to the French Ambassador? The guy was Scottish Secretary and he blatantly and openly in public and on TV and radio lied and was found out. And that's OK? Jeez!

I find it interesting that when I posed a direct question about whether Nicola Sturgeon should resign IF she had been found to be lying both SiLH and DfT refused to answer the question. They both said that the memo didn't exist. Turns out that it did exist but the contents were nonsense. Now the shoe is on the other foot both think the guy should resign.

And I have already stated in another thread that I think he should resign. Just as I believe Sturgeon should have if it was her that had lied about it.

There are going to be a lot of by elections this next 5 yrs is this is the basis for resignation. If he were still a minister then he would have to go but I see this as no worse than numerous dirty tricks that Grant Shapps, previous Conservative Chairman and head bully, got up to in the last few years. Labour had nobody as nasty or devious as Shapps but they would use them if they had, no doubt.

Are the SNP really so clean? Their youngest MP was quoted "on camera saying she wanted to “stick the nut on” Labour councillors after the referendum result". They didn't stop her from standing as an MP despite a threat of violence against another.

This is posturing and opportunism.

I hope he does resign, or is sacked. This isn't just a little lie, which pretty much all politicians are guilty of, its a lie and an action that has embarrassed the French Ambassador .... oh, and some Scottish bint.

And in the context of what he was trying to achieve with the lie, seriously sway the electorate, he deserves to hang!

But she hadn't lied!!!! And even if she had expressed the opinion that it wouldn't be the end of the world for the SNP were the Tories to win the election - that in fact it might be rather good for the SNP - no great surprise there then for anyone. This is totally different situation as the guy has admitted lying and being complicit in illegal activity during an election.

Did I ever say a memo didn't exist? Or did I say that the memo as being reported by the Telegraph was rejected by Sturgeon and the FA as not being an accurate reflection of the discussions?

It talks about it near the bottom of this link. By the sound of things, this one still has a long way to run.

As for the comments about Mhairi Black above, she didn't threaten anyone with violence. What she did say was that it took every ounce of her being not to 'stick the nut in them'. I'd say that showed restraint :mmm: ;)

Don't let the truth of a statement take away from it being used out of context...

Besides - if every time a Scot said such as 'your deid son!' resulted in a death there would be a heck of a lot more blokes up on murder charges than there are. But let's not let a bit of hyperbole used for effect take away from what might be meant when such phrases are uttered.

Where did I say she had lied? I asked you if she should resign IF she had been found to have lied. It was a direct hypothetical question and yet you try to wriggle out of it by saying that she didn't lie and you still refuse to answer. Ever thought about a career in politics?

I'm coming at this from a very ignorant stand point, but what was the illegal activity?

Vaguely remember at the time it was to do with a breach of electioneering rules... using certain information to sway the electorate is forbidden... can't remember the exact phraseology but I think its a valid case.
