I have just bought a SH set of Ping s57 irons which stopped production in 2010. Good clubs and as usual top of the range when they were on sale. If you were going to buy SH how far would you go back.

It would depend on the condition and which model it was. I bought a SH hybrid recently that was originally out 7-8 years ago.

Got the 5 because my 3 hybrid is the best club I've hit.

As far as irons are concerned.

I have a set on 2001 irons.

I would have no qualms using a particular set of 1998 ones.

Current irons are from about 2001/2 also.

For Drivers, I wouldn't look at much either brand new, nor more than 3 or 4 years old. There really hasn't been sufficient development to justify the cost of quite new, but more than about 3 years is definitely a bit old.

Everything else is down to personal 'taste' and how the individual golfer gets on with the club, though an RBZ Tour with a decent shaft seems to be a great combo of long and straight!

down to condition. I haven't hit my new (second hand set) of Calloway X-Forged yet, so this statment may change, but the best irons i have EVER used were Titleist 990s (from 2000). Even now, in mint nick , they still fetch over £100 and have stood the test of time well, in fact , i don't think have made a better iron............well maybe the 690mb/681 T Stamped :D

Last year I bought a callaway FT9 from bluewolf.

Just through curiosity I've been trying a few drivers recently I've yet to find a driver that feels as good as the FT9

No idea when they came out but I'd definitely go back as far as the Cally X14

Never used them but reported to be the best x series Callaway had.

Irons are easy, if the are forged and in decent nick then lofts and lies can be checked and tweaked, re-grip them every year and it will feel like a new set every year.

Particularly with irons, you can go back quite a bit. The technology in irons hasn't moved forward as fast as woods, so as long as they are in good nick, I wouldn't be afraid to buy them.

Woods, especially drivers, are a different matter and I think some drivers from more than 5 years ago are now a bit behind the curve. It depends, though. If you like Titleist, say, and don't need adjustability, the 909 is a good buy at sensible money.

By coincidence, I am trying to buy a set of Ping Zing 2's on eBay at the moment for my son who is just starting to play. Not sure when these were made but I guess the mid 90's?

I am hoping to get some for around £110. Not a bad saving when you consider that they were £600 when new.

I think you can go a long way back and get a really good set of clubs.

I am also quite keen to get a Ping Eye 2 wooden driver to have a go with too, purely for nostalgic and research reasons.

I have callaway BB 460 thats as good as my Ping G20. Clubs stopped offering a real performance improvement a long time ago. We are just suckers for shiny new stuff!

My 909 still seems to pop but it is getting kinda old...

My old man has 2 TM drivers. An R9 and an '09 Burner TP (Black sole) The Burner is still a weapon and more forgiving than Ryan Giggs' wife!

I do agree though. Shaft, weight distribution and materials used has moved on in this respect.

With irons, I suppose there's only so much the can do, cosmetics and maketing aside. Lofts are more jacked (Strong) these days, but this offsets how high irons are designed to launch. If I could get a mint set of Mizzy MP32's/37's (circa 2006) I happily play them.

My first ever set of Irons were a SH set of Mizuno TP-9 blades.
I think there were the clubs Nick Faldo used in the 90's.
I bought them in 2010.

They were excellent (hard to hit) but beautiful clubs none the less.
