Hi guys, I've hopefully got a lesson next week to learn how to swing a wood. My friend has lent me his Ping G2 so I can learn and practice this month. Unfortunately it'll have to back in his bag at the end of April. I feel I'm deserving of a little retail therapy so have planned to go to Nevada Bobs with my bro at the end of the month as he is looking to buy a driver.

I've read a number of posts on here where people have struggled with a different shaft in their fairway and driver yet from looking at a lot of signatures lots of you don't seem to have that problem.

Cutting to the chase I'm tempted to get a matching driver and fairway. Partly because of the matching shaft thing and partly as I'll think we'll be able to haggle quite well if between us we're buying two drivers and a 4 wood.

Thing is I doubt the driver will be in the bag this year as I work on my swing mechanics so should I just wait until the prices inevitably comes down?

The shopping/test list is:

Mizuno MX-700
Nike Machspeed (I'm thinking High Launch driver)
MD. Superstrong

Thanks for your thoughts

Don't buy a driver unless you are likely to use it. Your swing will inevitably change over the next 6-12 months.

Why aren't Ping on your list of potential beasts?

What sort of budget are you looking at?

If you go to a local pro and get to build that long term relationship, he'll be able to point you to something that he'll be able to match you up with in months to come.

Just a thought, if you get a full priced 4w now, you'll probably be able to pick up a cheap driver when the new improved range comes out in 6 months time, and your model is suddenly outmaded and old hat.

Hey CH, that's criminal oversight on my part the G15 should be on there. I suppose waiting is more of an option if i go Nike as the Mizuno are on there way out and surely the MD can't get much cheaper!

Hi

I can personally vouch for the Machspeed HL. I have that exact model in the bag and it is excellent.

Why not try and look at some 2nd hand ones as well. It might be that you can pick one up cheap on flea-bay. I'd be tempted to leave the driver alone at this stage and so once you get comfy using the 4 wood and you've had some driving lessons maybe treat yourself to a matching driver and 4 wood at that point (or go the driver 3 and 5 wood route)

Iv dropped the driver from my bag altogether and use 3 wood off the tee....Even though i could hit my driver i wasn't as consistent as i am with the 3 wood..... Im going to play the rest of the year with the wood and make it become second nature to hit it from all lies before i go get myself fitted properly for a driver.

Thanks for all the comments, that's made my mind up, fairway wood it is and then a fitting session down the line when my swing matures. I'm
a bit daunted by the second hand Market, as a newbie I'm not sure what's a bargain and what's not. But if they do have some to try at NB I'll give them a whirl.

Tiger,
If you're looking to buy a 4 wood, but don't want to spend a lot or dabble in the second hand market, I have a brand new (sellophane still on it) Benross Trimass V3 4 wood (17 degrees).
It has an Aldila NVS TM3 65R regular shaft and a golf pride grip. Includes headcover.

You can have it for £30 (+£5 postage) and I'll donate £20 of that to the Help for Heroes charity.

Try it, and in the unlikely event you don't get on with it you could probably sell it with little or no loss to yourself).

Let me know if you're interested. I'll be putting in the for sale section otherwise, but as I know you're looking for a 4 wood, you can have first dibs!! :D

That's a great price for a very decent club. I've got the same shaft in my Benross 4W, and that's worth the price on it's own. You could sell the shaft on for that sort of money, no probs.

When I went out with Leftie a couple of weeks ago I was hitting the 4W about 200 yards, and my decent drives with my 10.5* Wilson were only going 210-215 ( and there were less good hits with the driver than there were with the 4w )
