I see a pairs open comp Sunday 7th July. Anyone played it recently. £26 each including food. Is it any good? If anyone can give me a quick review that would be helpful. Thanks

lovely course, played it a couple of years ago, super greens, play it - Im sure you won't be disappointed...just don't hook it on 18th !!

It's a nice course, one of the best in Derbyshire. Parkland, with some well established trees. A mix of par 4's (some very short, some very tough), mostly reachable par 5's and a couple of very tough par 3's.
The front nine is much the easier nine.
The greens when I've played them in recent years have been true & very quick.

I've always enjoyed playing Burton as the greens tend to be in good nick.

The greens can be quite slopey, and if it's an open where you are putting from will likely be important.

1st be short, 2nd be left and short, 3rd little better right, 4th little better left, 5th better right (the ditch is about 300 off the tee), 6th better short,

7th a little better short, 8th better left and short, 9th a little better left, 10th better short, 11th better right, 12th better short,

13th better short (run this one in), 14th better left and short (evil green), 15th better right, 16th better short, 17th very much better right, 18th a little better short (if pins at back, don't go passed).

thanks for this hopefully we can get a decent round going and use your advice.

How did you get on?

I went with 3 mates. My 'pair' had 74 (with a STUPID! 2 shot penalty) and the other 2 had 76 I think.

One of my best ball striking days in a long time... hit 13 greens.
On the greens?! Ouch.
Pretty much every one of my 43 putts I hit where I intended to

We had a 76 and the pairing we played with had a 75. Not pretty but our excuse was it was to hot.
Now for the course. Burton on trent is a lovely course really well presented by the greenkeepers it's just a shame they had to find the 18 most difficult placements for an open day. It was pretty clear they wanted locals to win it. Greens are the fastest I have played on all year and the run superb. Carvery afterwards was really good as well.all in all an enjoyable day even though our score was poor.
