My brother and law and I play regular fourballs against our respective wives and the subject of handicaps is a much debated point. Holes where it is a par four for gents and par five for ladies cause confusion as does when the ladies are getting the benefit of a stroke at a hole as well as the benefit of playing off the ladies tee which could be 80/90 yards further on from the gents tee. Are there handicap rules which allow for these situations?

We are playing match play so you are working out who gets strokes on each hole compared to the lowest handicap and the SI on the hole

I assume you are doing four ball better ball? If you are then you pick the lowest handicapper of the 4 players. From this you calculate the difference in handicap between the 2 players. You then 3/4 this number to give the number of shots that player receives. So say Player A has the lowest handicap of 10 and player B has a handicap of 20. The difference in h/c is 10 shots. 3/4 of 10 is 7.5, rounded to 8. These shots would be given on holes with a stroke index of 1-8. You would then do this for players C and D also. With the issue of courtesy shots, there is nothing you can do about them. They are there for a reason. They play the whole as a par 5 you play it as a par4. The best nett score with the shots allocated wins the hole. I hope this helps :)

The ladies play off the mens card (still the ladies tee).
The shots for the round are still decided from the lowest H/C player however the ladies may recieve more or less depending on the SSS difference between the two courses. If the ladies is SSS 73 and mens SSS 71 then the ladies will recieve 2 additional shots which should be added to the total difference before doing any 3/4 calculations.
