Here are three links for you, showing different bunker shots, the only way I could get these was if I threw the balls in on practice as I have not made a bunker in play at my new club yet, but it pays to practice. These are casual ways to play bunker shots, the main focus being to always follow through, never under hit, if anything give it some more umph! The awkward one with hampered back swing I'm pretty pleased with. ;)

Very good.....me likeee.

I admire your attitude.....If I'd seen a tractor, I'd have aimed 20 yards left and thinned it for bonus points. :)

Good shots Herb. I need to work on my bunker game tbh, I reckon I could save at least two shots every round if I could get it close from the sand!

I think successfully getting out of the sand is a god send. When I do bunker shots I have the same mental aproach, before I enter the bunker I work out what Im gonna do, maybe have a loosen up swing before I go in, once Im in there I just focus on hitting it out cleanly. I suppose once Ive made my plan before going in the mental mechanisms must keep that data in the ready.

The way I play a basic bunker shot is by playing an invisible ball tucked up against my ball, I make sure I follow through and 99/100 I get it out clean, accuracy though is still the difficult bit, but if you practice enough you will NEARLY always(not always :( :D.

No good at all. Over clubbed on the first, underclubbed on the 2nd and 3rd and what happened on the 4th????? :D :D :D :D :D :D

Seriously though - good stuff. I think I'd have gone for the tractor too!!

I have a bunker lesson booked in next in my series of short game lessaons. My pro is talking about using a 60 degree wedge for bunker shots but I can usually get out pretty well with a 56 so the first 5 minutes may prove interesting. I can usually get out pretty well although distance control is normally my biggest problem. Again it was an area I didn't work on last year and so with my dedication to all thing short game related this year it is something that is bound to get better.

The bunker shot is probably the best shot I have in my game.

When I was 16 and just started playing with 36 handicap, I was really keen on practising. So I went into the practise bunker , blasting away, with no sucess whatsoever. Then this guy walked up and asked if he could show me how to play a proper bunker shot. He explained the basics and walked away. My dad then arrived and asked " did i realise who was teaching me"? To me he was just a golfer but it was in fact Mark James! His advice has saved me many shots and most times I prefer to be in the bunker, instead of that tricky chip over it. Once you have the confidence it is a really rewarding shot.

I have the one bunker shot. They all go the same distance, and if that is where the pin is, I look like a bunker god. If it isn't, I look like an idiot. At least they come out of the sand though.

^ same! I haven't been in a playable bunker in ages though (not through skill but through them being full of water), not looking forward to the Hitlers! (referencing 'Golf terms explained' thread :))

LOL... :)

That's the best thing I've heard in ages.....bunker god!!

It sounds a bit like me too t.b.h.

I can only play two types of bunker shot? 1 yard or 10 yards thats it.

I play fairways bunkers better than greenside.

On the Derby course at the belfry I stuck my drive into a fairway bunker on the 18th. I had about 160 to go to the green and the lip was almost too high for my 6 to get out. I played it perfectly and made the front of the green by about 10 yards, two putted for par for a very pleasing finish.

Shame the same shot on the PGA traveled a yard, then down the hill, and into the drink :D

Do you remember poor Andy at the 4th at Mollington.....we let him suffer (I won the hole, thankfully, he and I were a pair) and as we walked to the 5th tee, you said "dropping out of bunkers today".....d'oh....

Anyone heard from Andy.....

We need this rule at mine over the winter, ours are shocking when wet.

and watch the slide-show. 2nd picture is the double lake 190 yard par 3 17th. 4th picture is the grimly uphill 5th.....

Hahaha yes I do remember that, Although I dont think you should be let off when you end up in a bunker, I agree, some (most of our) bunkers are just ridiculas to play out of. I wanted to tell Andy he could drop but didnt want to speak during his shot. But Dave, didnt I half the hole with you? :D I'll take your word for it as my memory is a bit crud to be fair!

If you can't feel for a distance out of sand, at least knowing where you are going to hit the ball to out of the bunker with that one swing. Its far better than trying to feel for a swing out of sand & either ending up in the rough just outside the bunker, in another bunker oposite or still in the one you started.

Sometimes something you can depend upon is the way to score. And if it works, why knock it.

You've just reminded me of a miricle shot at lichfield I had out of a fairway bunker on a parr 4 with a 9 iron. Ball landed, bounced once & screwed back into the hole for a 2 on that parr 4... Did't know whether to apologise to my playing partners or jump for joy I was so gob smacked. Think it was the 7th hole.

You know you can play rubbish or mediocre golf all day long, then on a couple of choice holes we'll just have something click & everything just comes together & manage what on every other day would be imposible or unlikely for amatures.

I love bunkers when I'm playing well & have carried off some great ones, but alow myself to be taught or convinced myself into failing
