Had a short game/bunker lesson last Tuesday and came away with much more confidence. However, I failed badly to implement my new bunker shots in Saturday's medal. Tonight, playing partner points out that you need to aim an inch or so behind the ball and, voila, it now seems to be working. In fact, recorded my first sand save of the year, thus improving from 0 saves out of 19 to 1 out of 20. Woo hoo.

Good man. It takes practice to work out how a ball will react depending on how much sand you take and how open you have the face. Get yourself to a practice bunker and just mess around holding the face as open as you dare and then play around with hitting the sand about an inch behind the ball. It should result in a high soft escape.

Its all about getting to know how the ball will react. Hit a few from plugged lies, uphill/downhill etc and get a feel for it so you won't be fazed on the course. Sand play is great fun to practice

Get practicing - On Sunday I hit a 8 iron 130 yards it went lovely then started to draw into a greenside bunker full of fluffy sand - my first truly plugged bunker shot. Ball was 90% under the sand.
My normal bunker play is 'open face, hit 1 inch behind' and a nice high fly soft landing ball comes out.
Well on Sunday I looked at the ball and did not have a clue what to do - my open club practice would not have worked - I still am not totally sure of the correct shot. I just hit a regular SW 1 inch behind as hard as I could, result was a low trajectory escape that ran 50 feet past the flag down the hill at the back of the green. :D
