Bunker mentality has me beat

In the latest edition of Golf Monthly (Test Your Knowledge section) it states that when a ball is declared unplayable in a bunker it must be dropped in a bunker. I always thought you had the option, under one-stroke penalty, to drop the ball where you last played it. Am I wrong again?

No, you're right.

You only have to stay in the bunker if you take one of the other 2 options (2 club lengths or back on a line to the hole).

Thanks for that. However, my money would still be on the R & A getting the answer right to the specific example shown and me getting the interpretation wrong. Anyone armed with a copy of the article in a position to enlighten me?

Yes, the penny has dropped. The illustration talks about a player wishing to declare the ball unplayable and dropping it behind the point where the ball lay and the hole, and that has to be in the bunker. Only stroke and distance allows him to drop outside the bunker. Thanks for assistance.

Where do you drop if the ball is in a bunker full of water and it is not marked GUR?

If there is no place to drop in the bunker that's not nearer the hole , then it's drop outside bunker in line from where the ball was back as far as you want Rule 25b ,1 stroke penalty. I think .

I believe the free drop is still inside the bunker in the place of maximum relief no closer to the hole - where "maximum" doesn't mean necessarily "total", so you still might get wet feet or a splash when you hit; just not as much as before. You can drop outside the bunker at a cost of one shot.

#7 above is correct but in addition, without penalty
If complete relief is impossible, as near as possible to the spot where the ball lay, but not nearer the hole, on a part of the course in the bunker that affords maximum available relief from the condition".

If it's not marked GUR I don't think you get a free drop? I posted on this before and was told if it's not GUR it's a one stroke penalty if you move it- even if inside the bunker?
