Buildings insurance question

I have boiler cover and have claimed twice for boiler breakdown.

I would not bother with electrics or general plumbing cover as I can do those repairs myself.

My mother-in-law had it, and used it a couple of times. She was happy with it. It gave her peace of mind. I guess it depends on the T&C’s.
My parents had it. They had a bad water leak in their kitchen. My dad turned the water off at the mains before ringing the insurance company.

When he told them he had turned the water off, they said that because he had turned the water off there was not an issue that they could cover under the home emergency part of the policy.

Parents complained, pointing out the lunacy of being expected to leave the water connected (it was the way the policy was worded) and thus worsening the problem in order to have a valid claim, got some financial redress (not huge) and moved insurer.
