It's the missus' 21st in October and wanting to take her away.

Been looking at Budapest but not 100% convinced.

Anyone been and got any tips on places to stay, things to do etc? :mmm:

I went about 10 years ago with work. Very nice but clearly I am out of date. I do remember that one part was very nice and the other less so, either Buda or Pest. Find out which is the nice one, where most of the tourist things are and then stay there. Don't skimp on the hotel and be in the wrong part. It is not dangerous or run down but the nice area is simply much more pleasant. I'm sure others will be on with more up to date and useful information.

The other Mrs FD and I went years ago and loved it. Highlights were the views from fisherman's bastion, szechenyi (spelling?) baths, outdoor ice skating and also we took in an opera in the opera house which was pretty amazing albeit a bit bamboozling with Italian singing and hungarian subtitles!

The terror museum is worth a visit but quite emotional - it left us a bit drained and sad.

We still have a laugh about the wistful tune and deadpan voice they use on the underground to announce all the stops.

Definitely a great place to go for a city break!

Did Budapest a couple of years ago with Missis T loved it. Really really loved it. Prague is trashy and a stag/hen doers paradise. Budapest has more class.
We stopped at Buda castle hotel. Over looking Pest, the views from fishermans Bastion are stunning overlooking the government building which is stunning. It is out of the way but we loved it. Not central for pubs and clubs, but some nice resturaunts up there. It is a bus in and outta town if staying up at the castle area. If pubs and clubs are essential stay central. There is some fantastic quirky clubs to be found and I mean really really quirky. A visit to one of the spas is a MUST. enjoyed a river cruise. The food and beer was quality and not expensive if memory serves me right.
When me and Missis T went, we booked a train ticket to and from the airport which lasted us the full duration of our stay, (72 hrs purchased at the airport).
loved it.
enjoy me man.

Tashy - When I was there quite a few years ago there was a real explosion of strip joints, lap dancing bars etc. All very in your face and on the high street mingled with shops. Has that been tidied up or are they still there? I'm pleased you say it is still a good place to go to. I liked it but things can change either way. It may be one to go with my wife in future.

Thanks very much mate. We're gonna stay on the Buda side I think because we like to be in the thick of things.
Eyeing up a hotel called Prestige Budapest. It looks beautiful and has a '5' rating on TripAdvisor.

I've heard food and beer is cheap as chips and there's plenty to do apparently.
Will take a look at one of the river cruises on the Danube!

cheers!

Attractive city Budapest, nearly 20 years since I visited. I recall the parliament building, the parks, the river, russian soldier memorial, cheap good food and beer. Take the short trip up river to Szentendre, recall that was a really nice spot, might be a better spot to base yourselves in fact.

Hi mate, thanks for the advice.

Whilst Szentendre looks lovely I think we'd prefer to be in the thick of things.

I'm also going in the summer and very much looking forward to it. We've booked for 5 nights, as looks like loads to do.

We loved Prague, and most I know says Budapest is better, so doesnt look a bad pick.

If in doubt, see if any of your local libraries have a Dorling & Kindersley visitor guide in for Budapest - we bought our own, but lots of times the libraries have them in.

Gutted we didn't see any, just asked Missis T and she cannot remember seeing any. We went two years ago.

Tashy - To be honest that is good news. They all had sinister looking bouncers outside "encouraging" you to go in and there were a lot of them. They made you feel uncomfortable rather than tempted. I'm sure there will be some if you look hard enough but the way they were was not for the better.

We went last year and loved it. Loads to do and see. Decent bars and nightlife without the Brits abroad feeling.
Definitely go to the outdoor baths, indoor market and up to the top of the hill on the buda side.

Great City, that you can walk round or take a tram or even the underground railway. went two years ago, and five days is just right to see everything.
Didn't see any strip joints.:(;);)

You must go to the opera house. Stunning place, and tickets are very reasonable. We saw a ballet that was superb.

Some really good Hungarian restaurants, so look around for local ones. food is cheap as well.

We stayed in Pest which is flat, and much busier than Buda. you can get from one side to the other across the many bridges in the City. Our hotel was excellent and can fully recommend, though can't remember it's name. happy to pass on to anyone that is interested when get back from Spain.

If you want to stop in the thick of things then you need to be in the Pest part of town mate, Buda has the castle and that about it.

Just wander about/jump on the metro its a class city - the inlaws live just outside Budapest and we go regular (driving this afternoon actually). I'm playing golf at The Hungarian Golf Club tomorrow morning

I do think I got it wrong mate, the hotel mentioned is on the Pest side (opposite side of the castle if i'm correct?)

It's only about 50 meteres away from the Danube though so is in a great location!
