Anyone been to Budapest ?

Any recommendations for things to do, places to see etc. My wife has booked us a five night trip next month, so have a feeling Xmas shopping might be on the itinerary.

Lived there from 93 to 2000. Beautiful, beautiful city. Take your trunks, lots of thermal baths. Amazing restaurants, as a rule of thumb, avoid the beer, enjoy the wine. Palinka and Unicum; approach with caution.
anything specific you are looking for?

I assume Palinka and Unicum are drinks ?

Nothing specific. Best parts of the city to eat, drink etc. We have booked a hotel in Pest, but not sure if that is good or not. Do we need Hungarian currency or are Euros better.

It does look beautiful city, and hopefully the natives are friendly.

Unicum is sort of Jaegermesiter on steroids. Palinka is fruit schnapps. Some of them are quite nice!

Pest is the flat side. More commercial. Buda is greener and hillier. Both are fine. Do you know whereabouts the hotel is?

take Hungarian Forints. (I set up the bureau de change out there...and I was very fond of margin:D)

Taxis are one to be careful of. There are several excellent firms, City, Fo, Tele5 who are honest. There are some independent guys even fonder of margins than I was!

There is a statue near Heroes park called the Anonymous statue.....rumour has it that if you touch the pen, it will make you a better writer.........try it and then come back on here and start writing some decent stuff!!!

Also the house of terror is worth a visit......

iPad playing up! Natives are friendly, female ones are also stunning!

Lingo is incomprehensible, but most Hungarians are multi lingual. There are some incredible places, The Statues Park is a bit of a trek, but when the wall came down all the Communist statues were moved to a single park. Surreal. The old HQ of the Secret Police on Andrassy Ut is now a museum...quite a sombre place. There are loads of baths, probably the best is Szechenyi at Heroes Square. Play chess on a floating board in a hot bath, outside with icicles hanging off the surrounds.

restaurants...literally hundreds of them.

Gundel near Heroes Square is the 'experience' of Hungarian Cuisine. Top Dollar.
Baraka on Andrassy is classy fusion. Not cheap, but reasonable.

in town, head for the Basilica. Loads of good restaurants and bars. Best, in terms of value and food is Cafe Kor.

Could go on and on....

I hate to think which part of the statue you were touching to make you a better .........

Hotel is in the Palace quarter if that means anything to you. Supposedly a short walk to the centre of Budapest. Hopefully should be quiet judging by reviews on tripadvisor. Comes out second highest rated hotel on there so hopefully will be decent.

Joszefvaros. You will be fine there. A little outside the 'centre' so as you say, should be quiet. Generally the standards are very good, I wouldn't worry about that. It will be proper cold in December, possibly snow on the ground, so take decent waterproof shoes! A walk around the castle district is beautiful in the winter. Statue of a horse up there that you touch for luck...which bit? The shiny bit.:smirk:

Use public transport. The trams and buses are brilliant, cheap and easy. Buy your tickets in an underground station

Its a lovely city. We went a couple of years ago, make sure you do a boat trip on the Danube, preferably by night.

We stayed on the Pest side of the river, but Budda has plenty to see and do. Make sure you get the Goulash. The Terror museum is worth a visit.

Magic place
