Brussels

Do like Belgium, but my fave city is Bruges. You certainly won't be lost for beer choices. the usual Chocolate and chips with mayo goes down well.
did bring back a few years ago an nice bottle of thick advocat. Weather is very similar to England so wrap up.

Bugger, thought this might be about where I could buy some cheap [bulk] sprouts :smirk:

Don't go on the Eurostar. My mate works for the Dept of Health and went to Brussels for meetings. Sat on the train going nowhere for three hours because of migrants in the tunnel. Third time in two weeks he's suffered. I say suffered but was in first class and so the wine kept coming

I regularly go to Brussels for work and I find it a souless, depressing city with hardly anything going for it apart from great beer and good 'chips'!

However the Grand Place is very nice and there are some really good seafood restaurants, but all in all pretty much what you would expect from the 'capital' of Europe (do not even think of going to the 'European' district unless you want to see where much of your hard earned money has been enthusisatically spent on so much concrete and glass to house those hard-working Eurocrats!!). Your best bet would've been to stay in Bruges and just got the train in!

So this is the reason the Depts running out of money.

Probably! All the staff - including Ministers - in my Department (Defra) travel Economy; my understanding that was the rule across Government.

Might have livened up since i was last there in the 90's, everyone went to bed at 9pm and all the bars shut about the same time

A group of us were walking through an old Brussels city centre arcade looking for a bar to close the evening after having had a lovely meal. We were just a group of a 6 couples - yacking away as you do having not seen each other for a year- and a police foot patrol stopped us and asked to talk a little quieter as residents were going to bed :)

And Kwak! But not too much.

If you have time, go to Ypres and visit the Tyne Cot Cemetary before going to the Menin Gate in Ypres centre for the rendition of The Last Post which occurs bang on 8.00pm every night.
It'll truly humble you ............................ it's good for the soul.

Slime.

Thanks Ken and Slime, I was regretting booking at one point. Been to Bruges and will probably go there on the train. Will also try to get to Ypres.

Belgium is a very friendly place from my experience. Took the wife a few years back and we've been back seven times now, usually just city breaks from 2-5 days. Agree Bruges is absolutely stunning. Enjoyed Brussels but preferred Bruges.
