I recently posted a thread regarding whether to go to The Belfry, Celtic Manor or Brockett Hall for our March golf trip. After receiving some excellent advice from the guys on here we decided to go for Brockett Hall.

We are playing both the Palmerston and the Melbourne, if anybody has played there and has any tips or advice on the course, accommodation or facilities that would be great.

I have heard that the on-site restaurant is pricey so any alternatives would be very much appreciated.

Thanks Guys

The Wellington, White Horse, Aqua (Italian) in Welwyn Village are good (about 2 miles away). The Brocket Arms or The Waggoners are good too.

The Wellington have rooms otherwise there are a few chain hotels locally.

Thanks mate, what are the courses like?

2 good courses

Palmerston is the top course, the newer of the two, woodland course weaves through the trees, big greens but with some big slopes, most people have this as the better of the two (when you get to the top of the hill after the 11th green pause and have a look around, views are stunning)

Melbourne is the bottom course and the original of the two, more open but has water (river) in play on many holes, several with some pretty big carries (partly dependent on tees) and finishes where you get the electric ferry across the lake to the 18th green

In addition youve some of the best practise facilities you will come across plus a cracking little par 3 course (its to the left of the practise facilities)

Bar/restauarant are on the pricey side for sure, if its not included Id be tempted to head out in the evening for dinner, either to one of the pubs Arnold has mentioned or theres a few nice restaurants in Wheathampstead and even more choice if you go to Welwyn or St Albans depending on what you fancy

When are you heading there? If you have any more questions feel free to ask, if i dont know the answers can always ask the old man whos likely to know

Actually, for a post round Lunch/Beer, the upstairs Bar is not particularly expensive - at least Ok for the quality/quantity.

Courses are up there in the 'really good' category, if perhaps not quite in the top league (like Woburn etc).

I prefer the Melbourne, simply for the variety, though the first couple of holes can be 'interesting' and they occasionally swap greens for the 4th and 16th (still proper greens, just not playing 2nd shots across the river) which detracts slightly. Eighteenth approach shot is unforgettable! Palmerston has a better start - nice open par 4 - and plenty of really good holes. Greens on both courses should be up there with the best! I'm sure you won't be disappointed!

Thanks for your help, really glad we decided on Brockett Hall. Sounds like we have got a pretty good deal. I like to practice so I am looking forward to seeing the facilities.

A couple of the group play off 26, how do you think they will find it?

We have hired buggies, do you know what access around the courses are like with buggies?

Thanks mate, sounds really good, seriously looking forward to it. I few people keep mentioning Woburn, Just how good is it? I am thinking it could be a good option for my birthday in August.

Oh and have it book for the last weekend in March

If you mean the 29th then Im there the day before on the friday :)

The 26 cappers will be fine on the Palmerston albeit there will be plenty of 3 putts they may find some of the carries on the Melbourne a bit tough in places (and lose a few balls), would ensure you play off the yellows (though rare they let you off the back tees)

Have a great weekend

Thanks mate, what are the courses like?

My guess is you will enjoy them, plenty of water to negotiate on the Melbourne, slightly more trees on the Palmerston, they are both quiet long with a good variety of holes, usually in good condition but can get a bit wet.

they do tend to push a lot of players out onto the courses these days so can be busy and a longish round, there is a good halfway house on the Melbourne. I'm sure you will enjoy the ferry ride on the Melbournes par 5 18th.

To me, Woburn can be summed up in one word: special. I love it there. Three super courses, which divide opinion as to which is best. My preference is the Marquess, Duchess and Dukes, but any of them are better than Brocket (which I also like a lot).

Enjoy!
