Brocket Hall

Ooh! Couldn't read the full article as it's behind patwall but about 15 years ago J had a corporate membership here shortly after it opened. Just me and my MD who wasn't a golfer. The Melbourne was a lovely course and the newly laid out Palmerstone looked decent too.

Has the golf gone pop now?

Was considering a trip to play there this summer, but after speaking with their reservations department it just seemed incredibly overpriced.

They were both very nice courses back then and I can only assume that they have improved and matured over the intervening years. What's the cost just out of interest?

I am on the mailing list and everything they send looks very expensive, The golf complex looks very nice but with companies like YGT doing such fantastic deals its only top 100 courses than can get away with charging a premium in todays market.

Even the open comps are quite expensive

I play there occasionally with a member and it's really great value that way - and only £10 more in 'Summer'! But only that way! Walk-on rate is ridiculous!

Both courses are great. The Palmerston is the one used for Opens etc and is a bit 'cleaner' and more flowing imo. Melbourne has some more interesting holes, but doesn't seem to flow as well - to me. And the 1st and 2nd are arguably daft! The 18th, where you ride a ferry across the Lea River (unless using buggies!!) is a really 'fun' finishing hole - that owes me a dozen or more balls!

Just the golf was £550 for a 4-ball, so £137.50 each. They offered me a residents package of £185 per person, that included 36 holes, and bed and breakfast, which isn't terrible when you compare it to the green fee only, but not exactly cheap

Worth continuing to check that price. I saw it at £99 a while go (in summer too) - which was a bargain! But with changed circumstances, that's probably unlikely to happen again.

Played both courses there over a golfing weekend but didn't stay as it was too expensive. Stayed in central Hertford which is only 15 minutes away. The courses are first class and the practice facility is to die for. I believe they have a michelin starred restaurant onsite too but that was out of our league.

The restaurant is Auberge du Lac, it had lost its star (They didnt have enough staff members the day the checks were made) but not sure whether theyve got it back yet. Get some very good lunchtime deals there

Expect those sort of deals (through YGT) and the even cheaper one through Groupon wont be seen again for a while, certainly not until all has been sorted

I haven't played but not heard one bad report on the courses nor heard anything about them being too costly

Hope to get there at some point soon and I hope the issues isn't effectjng the golf courses or the golfers there

We were supposed to have a forum meet there. Seem to remember they didn't get back to Smiffy, or was it they didn't honour the deal they offered verbally. Something like that, but a shame as it looks nice.

why didnt you just stop after the first 3 words rather than give an opinion youve already stated is based on heresay?

a) because I can
b) because the people that told me I trust their opinion as being unbiased
c) it's a forum and about opinion whether first or second hand. What about all the Woods posts. Everything on those and similar based on heresay as no-one is close enough to know any different

Ahhh...the infamous "Old Farts v Whippersnappers" meet (part II).
To be fair Rich, it wasn't Brocket Hall that let us down, it was the "agent" I was booking through (can't remember their name now).
They had confirmed a date and price (after much faffing around and swapping dates to accommodate them) and I was waiting an age for them to let me know how much deposit they wanted etc.
I kept chasing and chasing and getting fobbed off, and in the end it transpired that Brocket Hall hadn't even published their prices or confirmed availability with them, so I let it go in the end.
It was a shame because the venue looked ideal.
