So I hear on the radio that a 20yr old Briton has been found murdered (stabbed in chest) outside a club in Malia, Crete. And just one hour ago my 18yr old daughter headed off there with 5 girlie mates. Brilliant :(

Don't you just love us - drunken a**eholes that we are when abroad on holiday.

That's why I tend to choose destinations that aren't a 24/ 7 drunken party; to be fair though the report has no detail at the moment so a bit early to jump to conclusions or blame the British booze culture.

One of my biggest hates are "Brits Abroad" - When I get the choice my holidays abroad are to places Brits haven't heard of and/or don't sell cheap lager! One trip to Benidorm was enough for me!

Arrive at holiday destination check list.

1. Find nearest Irish bar / Linekars
2. Find nearest place that does a full English
3. Find newsagent that sells "The Sun"
4. Unpack union Jack swimwear
5. Dig out tanning oil even though my body has seen zero sun all year
6. Engage with "locals" in your best louder slower english with a slight spanish accent
7. Have 10 pints
8. Do a sick on the pavement
9. repeat for 7 days

Done.

I always avoid the Brit hot spots when going on holiday it is really embarrassing sometimes to be called a Brit.....:( I tend to choose places where you have to blend in and not stick out as a pom, eat local food and wine and these places actually tend to be cheaper!

That said we tend to give ourselves a hard time because I've been to places where the Italians, Germans and French go for there vacations and they are lets say far from well behaved but in a different way to what we do...... On the whole we as Brits spend like mad and keep these tourist places going so the locals put up with it.

there is nothing more pleasurable than drinking Guinness and eating a roast dinner in the hot Spanish sun

...and I'm not going to tell my Mrs about this. If she spots it - fine - I'll deal with her inevitable worrying - if not then ignorance won't hurt her.

You probably don't want to know what she gets up to at home either!

That regrettable incident might mean it's rather 'safer' for her.

Yes - that's most likely true - but try telling that to a mother who dotes on her daughter. Unfortunately I have a fair idea of what she gets up to at home.

As Foxholer says that place will prob be the safest place around for the next week or so the local cops will have a big clampdown , if i remember correctly from long ago its the local youths that take the hump twords the loud holiday makers & lads being lads it escalates into trouble ...

to be honest most non family hot spots have trouble, its just the fact it happened to a Brit that its been highlighted in Britain & for every 1 incident ,thousands have holidays to remember incident free..

there wont be a bother on her , look forward to your "I SHOULDNT HAVE WORRIED" thread ...

thanks for that buddy - it's a concern when they get to this age

Went to Malia years ago and was great fun and wasn't mmuch trouble. But you will always get incidents in areas where there is basically a mass group of first time holiday makers able to run free.

I'm sure all will be ok and she'll have a cracking time incident free.
