Going up to visit some friends in York later this year.
For a change we're considering using the train to save on the 6 hour drive.
Went on line to check advance rail fare and its coming out at just shy of £300 :(

Think we'll be driving and maybe put a stopover somewhere on the way up :D

I have a 10am eye appointment in London on Thursday. Rush hour 8.45 train£72 return, an hour later return using my railcard about £22

If you can travel off peak then there are deals to be had. My season ticket it 4000 per year for a 30 mile journey .

The cheapest advance tickets go on sale 12 weeks ahead. Also consider breaking the journey tickets up same trains split tickets and you can save a fortune!

Anyway you can search these split journeys ?

TBH I think we will just spent the cash on a nice stopover and meal and just suffer the drive back in one hit.

I travel from Durham to London quite often and if you can book in advance and be flexible with timings you can go First Class Return for as little £80.00, even cheaper with a railcard.

The irony of course, is that one of the reasons it's so expensive is that it hasn't been 'British Rail' for about 20 years... Rather like certain department store chains, an awful lot of money has been extracted from the industry by the marvel that is global capitalism..

If you book 12 weeks in advance, it's not anywhere near that expensive. I booked up to edinburgh recently from the South east and it was about £75 return. Much nicer than driving.

It is a bloody racket though, I'm just trying to look on the bright side..

Most of the big European countries are nearly as expensive as us. The two cheapest (by a lot) that I've used are Spain and Italy - generally considered to be economic car crashes. I'm not sure if this is cause or effect....
