And so it begins....

Wayne Rooney is determined to make up for past failings by helping Roy Hodgson's side to glory at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil

outlined his burning desire to put “the icing” on his career by helping England to triumph at next summer’s World Cup

My bold but why are sections of the UK press already talking about glory & triumph for England next year?

I know they want to sell papers etc but surely even the English don't want this all over again!

I know its not the players/manager touting these expectations its simply Press spin but a spin that turns off so many from wishing them well

So once again I'm gutted Scotland were nowhere near good enough to be at the party & yeah I'll be cheering on whoever plays England (& to be fair even without tripe like the press quotes above its unlikely that I'd cheer on our rivals) but there's a big step from being indifferent about England's performance to actually wishing them to fail, and reporting like the above is all the motivation I need to do the latter

Gotta be in it to win it :)

We English are normally so reserved, that its good sometimes to let our hair down(if we have any left) and indulge in a little bit of fantasy and hope .

Dont worry, I have no illusions about our ability to lose on penalties in the quarter finals, but they just might be able to do it

Without that hope there is no point in having a world cup is there!

It is a point of conjecture as to what would be reported in the press north of the border if Scotland had qualified and England hadnt.

However it will be at least another 4 years before we stand a chance of finding out. unfortunately

Meanwhile...."C'mon Engerland" :whoo:

I've no idea what paper this was in, but in reality isn't all they are doing writing a story on what Rooney said? Who has been media trained to say meaningless platitudes such as that he would like to help England win the next world cup. I'm not really sure how else they could have reported Rooney saying that he hoped to end his career with a win in the world cup.

If they would have run an opinion piece saying England could well win it then fair enough, but in this case I don't see much hype building.

You don’t think that by adding unsaid words (that at best could be described as synonyms) such as glory & triumph, could be seen as hype?

Rooney wants to win the world cup, what a shock! I may have to go and lie down after that amazing announcement :D

Theres only one person spinning a story here.

Pretty sure Spain,Germany,Holland......... Press will be writing pretty much the same about their national team.

Mind you...they at least have a chance of winning it......

The Press will write what they want to write - any sane person knows that England go to Rio with a very outside chance of making the Semi-Finals

Just to be clear, my rant in the OP is against press hype. Not the England team, its manager or any of its players!

I agree with Spain n Germany, not holland. We can dream.

It is always the same. A couple of half decent results and we are the best national football side in history. It is pathetic drivel, written by bottom feeding morons for a delusional, British footballing public that is as voracious as it is gullible.

This thread reminds me of the Ewan Mcgregor rant on Train Spotting.

So I'm guessing you missed the entire point of that particular piece of Welsh magic.

Anyway, I hope England do well next year, and anything from quarters finals on will be seen as success. It does look like the squad of players they could take looks very good indeed, with a nice blend of youth and experience.

Fwiw I'd not take Lampard,Milner or Carroll, but would deffo be looking at Morrison and Barkley to make the plane.

A good summing up of your post here Snelly - I think you may be a little out of touch with the feeling towards our national team.

That doesn't stop people supporting them and wishing for the very best though.
