BP Ultimate fuel

Right then...

Had a meeting in Birmingham today and with 115 miles in the tank thought I'd fill up before I hit the motorway.

i know BP is a lot dearer but wasn't too fussed as a one off however I switched to lazy mode and after about 2 mins at the pump realised I'd chosen the the ultimate diesel fuel at a whopping £1.59p/l.

Anyway, after a decent run there and back on the M6 I was absolutely shocked (and a bit happy) to see that my MPG was a superb 66.5.

It was my first long run in the car since I got it (mk7 golf 2.0 gtd) but I'm sure 66.5 is nowhere to be seen in the manuals. I wasn't in Eco mode and was doing a steady 70, sometimes hitting 80 and sometimes going down to 60.

The car is economical anyway but can this be put down solely to the fuel do you think? Is it that 'Ultimate'?

not sure tbh, I always use the premium petrols in my TT, I find it more responsive and slightly better mpg compared to when I put in standard stuff. Diesel is probably a different animal altogether.

I average 28-30mpg though :(

I have an Alfa GT diesel and it's only supposed to do a combined 48.6mpg but it's sitting at 53.1mpg over a distance of 1100 miles. It's more to do with the distance you drove. If you are alternating between 60 and 80 it will use less fuel than slowing right down and speeding up through the low gears.
As for the fuel, I'm not sure that a factory standard engine knows the difference or sees any remarkable performance. In precision performance engine yes. Otherwise it's just a money making exercise for the fuel companies IMO.

Tested by fifth gear. In performance engines a slight boost in bhp but overall it's a complete waste of time. You're better off buying more of the cheap stuff!

Saying that, I treat myself every couple of months to a tank of high octane 99 stuff

I've got additional mileage, but not sufficient to justify the additional cost.

Used to use Premium every so often as a 'cleaner', but don't believe that's required either.

Same on the bike. I get maybe about 5 miles extra per tank but that doesn't justify the cost.

Don't actually begrudge the Petrol companies the extra cash - most of the cost of fuel goes to the treasury - but they should make it worthwhile for the motorist!

I just use a bottle of Cataclean every 3 months. It practically strips the inside of the engine, combustion chambers and EGR/Exhaust system.
Great stuff and at £15 a bottle, cheaper in the long run than filling up with the so-called premium fuel.

I have tried a test between ASDA and Go diesel which was 2p more in as balanced a way as I could. I put in diesel as soon as the light came on. Topped up with 28 litres each time. Did, it 3 times for each alternating each time and also checked tyre pressure each time. Driving for work so all driving was pretty much the same roads in similar conditions etc.

Averaged 40 miles extra per fill with the slightly more expensive Go fuel. This despite the MPG on the TRIP being pretty similar each time. So I would say that there is definitely something about it for diesel cars anyway.

We have a Toyoya Avensis TD3x and on the way there've were averaging a shade over 70MPG.

I run the same car to work and back everyday and average about 58MPG

There's something to be said for driving carefully.

Is that the same as the old redex you added to your petrol to de-coke the piston chambers in the good old days ?

Does anyone know of anyone or used themselves the engine and cat cleaning system that was on wheeler dealers? Terraclean I think?
No idea of cost but supposedly increases mpg and lowers emissions.
