Boxing/UFC 2018-25

I think that is the key point here. This is not a boxing match, it's an entertainment evening. That's fine, but lets not pretend otherwise.

The bit that staggers me is the numbers. Who is paying to watch this? Who paid to watch Jake Paul v Mike Tyson? We know it's hooeey so who pays to watch it? The numbers are massive so clearly lots of people will pay, I just can't understand why.
I won't pay to watch it, but I'd probably watch it if it happened to be on. I have Netflix, so if it was on that, I'd watch it. But I know millions would pay to watch it.

I won't be thinking "this fight will decide who the greatest boxer on the planet is". I'll simply watch it due to the entertainment value. To see how a so called professional boxer can dismantle a youTube pretender. Or will he? I know very little about Paul, but can he genuienly mount any sort of challenge to the pro?

We've had celebrity boxing years ago, and that generated interest. People watch all sorts of garbage reality TV and love it. People spend hours every day on youTube watching nonsense, and love it. It is clear millions of people are interested in this piece of entertainment, hence why it is making more money. And crucially, there are probably millions upon millions more people who are fans of this sort of "reality TV / social media" type entertainment than there are proper boxing fans. Many of the people who will pay to watch this are the types that are happy to watch a one off 30 / 60 minute event like this, but will never generate enough interest to have a prolonged interest in boxing and getting to know many of the different fighters, weight categories, etc.

The PPV numbers will be through the roof I suspect
I genuinely don't understand why. In the early days of these bouts, Paul did grudge matches against other Youtubers. That made sense, these just don't

@Swango1980 do you not think that this will staged in the same way that the Tyson fight was? Joshua will agree not to KO Paul for at least 3-4 rounds, maybe even the whole fight. He will jab, fake the odd punch, put on a display. If Joshua actually hit him full on it would be all over in seconds. Whatever people think of him, he is a pro fighter, Paul is an amateur. The gulf is enormous. I'm not seeing what is interesting about that.

It is honestly something I haven't thought anything about (being staged), and perhaps I'd come to certain conclusions after seeing the fight. And I doubt many others would be thinking too hard into that either. Some will just be thinking Joshua is going to hammer him, others will be hoping Paul takes him by surprise.

At the end of the day, there are millions of fans of the WWE, which I don't personally understand, as that is clearly staged. But just because I don't understand the appeal, it doesn't mean the appeal isn't real.

And if it is the gulf between the two that makes it unappealling to you, it will probably be the key reason why it is so appealing to others. David versus Goliath. Like a minnow playing a Premier league team in the FA Cup. Can Paul get one lucky punch that hurts Joshua?

If Joshua has any hope of keeping his credibility as a top level fighter he cannot do anything other than knock him out quickly.

Joshua should be going down the route of this is easy money and I’ll put him back in his place.

I agree I don’t understand but the US viewers seem to want to see Paul and everyone will want to see AJ slap him down

Millions watch WWF and I don’t understand why

I'd agree with that.

If we are talking about Joshua's credibility in professional boxing, he needs to knock the guy out in pretty much his first punch. Either that, or drag it out over many rounds, but make it look 100% obvious that he is comfortable and taking the mick

I can, people are desperate to see the YouTuber knocked out! But he engineers clauses to ensure it doesn't happen.

I think the boxing purists are struggling to understand what Joshua has to gain from this fight.
If he knocks him out it’s what he should do and doesn’t go up in any rankings or in people’s estimations.

If it goes all the way or he loses it paints boxing in a poor light.

For all we know Joshua is thinking he can’t do it at the top level anymore so why not fight a few easier opponents bank an absolute fortune for a couple of easy fights and then 1 last big one against Tyson Fury, he might even fight Tommy Fury first.

I think Tyson Fury is all he really wants before retiring now. This Paul thing is just a bonus payday. Take the money, knock him out early hopefully.

Yeah I think you’re right.
Might even take on similar fights until Fury is ready.
Couple of fights against lesser opponents just keeps him and his bank balance ticking over nicely.

Shame him and Fury never got it on 5-10 years ago though

I wonder what compromises they'd make if it was for $50 million

I’m someone who pays for big boxing PPV’s. However, I got into boxing in the late 80’s/early 90’s when it was shown on terrestrial tv. The big fights attracted huge tv audiences. Sky and then PPV drastically changed who could and would watch.

The Netflix involvement in Joshua v Paul (and Tyson v Paul) is interesting. 60% of UK households apparently have a Netflix subscription, so it will be available at no extra cost to them. Latest figures I could find suggested about 35% of households had Sky subscriptions - though I suspect this is outdated. But if the majority have access to Netflix - this event is essentially free to them. It would be interesting to see if Netflix build off the Paul connection and move more into boxing and other sporting events (they do have rights to WWE…). It wouldn’t quite replicate terrestrial tv but would raise the profile/viewership compared to PPV.

There does seem to be a tactic being explored by subscription based streaming channels. UFC is moving to being shown on Paramount and moving away from PPV (at least in the USA).

Have to laugh at ex boxers criticising Joshua for taking this fight.
Like they wouldn’t do it for £50m+
Not all would!! Most yes but not all, Prince Naseem was asked last year if he would do something similar and come back if the money offered was £20m+, “his response was what do I need the money for, I have my faith , my family and I’ve had my time”

I whole heartedly agree most would but we can’t say all would! Personally I’d let Joshua beat me up for less if it secured my family’s life for ever 🤣

Although there is a difference between responding to a hypothetical offer and responding to an actual offer :ROFLMAO:
