Digging a hole for myself

Just wanted to have a quick gripe about this place and solicit opinion in case I've made a rash assessment of the place.
Spotted it online and checked opening times/prices etc. Thought it looked a likely spot to hit some balls on the way home so called in there last night, around 7pm.
Walked over to the range and found that the office/shop was closed but there was a ball machine that took pound coins. Unfortunately, I had none with me. No signs to suggest an alternative, but I had a walk down the clubhouse/bar where there was a member of staff behind the bar. No customers, so can't have been very cheerful for her - and it showed.
I politely asked whether she could provide any change for the range and whilst she did have a poke around in a jam jar, she said she couldn't give me change out of the till without me buying something. Having little option, I left.
Is it just me, or is this just not very welcoming to a new customer who, had he have got to hit some balls, may well have turned it into a regular haunt, spending up to £15/20 a week? Her manner was not outright hostile, but it wasn't particularly charming either. Can't say I'll be in a hurry to return, which is a shame because the range looked to be quite nicely set up.
Anyone else go there?
