looking at going to Bournemouth for my stag do next year for a couple of nights with a 3/4 rounds of golf. There will be a mix of players from low handicaps right through to those who very rarely play.

am looking for some recommended courses to play? wouldn't mind playing one standout course, maybe broadstone, isle of purbeck or remedy?

we have a budget of £250 for accommodation and golf ( may play the nicer course on a twilight tee time )

would we be better going through golf breaks etc or booking it all separate?

Isle of Purbeck can be a pretty brutal course and even more so if the weather isn't in your favour. I'm not sure how enjoyable it would be to those who rarely play, can be a bit of a slog if your game isn't 100%.

We played Purbeck, Meyrick Park and Broadstone. The latter 2 would be suitable for most standards although aren't the most awe inspiring.

Ferndown, Remedy, Parkstone, Broadstone are all excellent. Isle of Purbeck is a great location, but not the best for condition - and if the wind is up, brutal...

Isle of purbeck have a good twilight rate so may book that. Ive never played a coastal course so might have to give it a go. Just looking for a couple of other resonible priced courses

Ferndown twilight rate is £47.50 which is 1/2 price so should fit in your budget
Parkstone is £95 full price
Broadstone is £85 full price
Isle of Purbeck Twilight is only £25 after 2pm and £20 after 5pm

playing 4 might be pushing it, I can see you playing 1 full price course and 2 twilights

Interesting comments. I wouldn't consider IOP to be particularly 'brutal' and Meyrick and Broadstone are both decent enough tracks.

Other golf courses worth considering would be:

Knighton Heath
Dorset Golf and CC
Dudsbury

KH and Dudsbury are about 15 min drive from Bournemouth town centre, Dorset CC is about 25 mins.

I would say these are all in the 2nd tier of courses in the area, but are a good challenge for low handicaps whilst being fairly playable for the higher handicaps, although Knighton Heath is quite tight!

You should get good deals on all these courses.

Cheers for the relpys. Ive had a few quotes from golf breaks and they have added moors valley, the dorset and ferndown forest are any of these courses worth a go. I dont expect to play 4 top courses but dont wont to waste a trip away playing sub standard courses

I think Ferndown Forest and Moors Valley are below all other courses mentioned in this thread. I wouldn't rush to play them to be honest.

Ferndown Forest is a glorified pitch and putt IMO, Moors Valley is OK though, not particularly long but you do have to plot your way round and its in decent condition

If you are on a budget then consider Meyrick, Dudsbury and the Dorset Golf & Country club. Several of the ones mentioned (Parkstone, Ferndown & Remedy) are not cheap and wouldn't be suitable for occasional golfers.

Knighton Heath, Playgolf and Isle of Purbeck are worth considering as well.

Would avoid Moors Valley, Ferndown Forest & Queens Park

Certainly agree with advice to avoid F_Forest, small beginners layout (although does a good job getting people into game in a unintimidating / relaxed way).

Ive played moors valley a number of times and whilst it is short, I have always enjoyed the game here, more so than dudsbury that can feel like slogging around a field on occasion to the point I'd put MV higher up my pref list than Dusdbury.

Ferndown did have a reputation for being a bit unwelcoming / snobby when I lived in Bournemouth but may be better now. On a good day it is difficult not to enjoy IoP but in the wind / rain........

Merick, not Queens parks has been said, Broadstone / Parkstone are both good if you can get on at a reasonable price.

I quite like Moors. Very short, but usually in OK condition, very good value for money.

Avoid Queens Park

If you have cars and fancy something a little further out, Ashley Wood course out by Blandford Forum isn't too bad

As a member at Dudsbury, I'd have to disagree with the above (but we are all entitled to our opinions, so no prob!). New greenkeeper last year, course is in fabulous condition, very welcoming and accessible from Bournemouth. Moors Valley, whilst a nice course, is shorter and flatter, is much further out, and clubhouse very basic. Ferndown, Broadstone and Parkstone can be expensive but are excellent. Knighton Heath is tight but OK, I also like the Dorset, but it is further out - prob 45 mins from Bournemouth Town centre. Isle of Purbeck on a sunny windless day is glorious for the views. I don't think it's worth the risk as there aren't many days when it's like that!
Ashley Woods hasn't been mentioned at all, might also be suitable, but I'd take Dusdbury, Dorset, Knighton Heath in that order for the kinds of golfer you are talking about. Defo not Ferndown Forest.

And curve ball would be Came Down over in Dorchester. Glorious views, fabulous greens, awesome welcome in the clubhouse. Dorset's gem, just a bit further away.

You get the same winds at Came Down as you do at IOP as they are both high up.
