having only started playing this summer i was advised to avoid a driver and concentrate on my irons off the tee or a 3-wood. i ignored this advice and bought a nike driver but couldn't hit it for toffee so got rid and just used my 4iron off the tee.... i eventually moved onto my 3 Wood which i struggle with consistency wise even though the rest of my game is pretty good.
i took the plunge on a Ping G5 last week and i am sooo pleased with it, i have a big fade with my 3wood and this baby goes straight as an arrow - i think because i'm not trying to force it as i probably do with the 3-wood.

Happy days! one more thing, distance wise i'm going about 280yards - that decent? :D

That seems a heck of a long way. Luke Donald doesn't hit it that far.

Anyway, the slice will be gone until you start thinking you can get more out of the G5 by hitting it harder, then it will be back with a vengeance.

yes it is but when you first start playing and having some lessons you never touch anything other than your irons (mostly 7iron in my experience) so trying to adapt your swing from an iron to a driver is much harder to do.

Most of the guys who say drivers are hard to hit (me included) were brought up in the days when drivers had persimmon heads the size of cotton reels.
These were difficult to hit, and had a sweet spot that was microscopic.

Modern drivers are way more forgiving, provided you have enough loft and a half decent swing.

Modern clubs are an improvement on the old stuff but hitting well is something you should be able to do with any club with practice. A lot of it is just in the mind.

Hitting 280 with modern clubs and a decent swing is not beyond anyone these days, whats difficult is converting that expectation to a useable tool on any golf course.

Hitting on a range, I can bang 300+ yds all day long as I dont have to worry about accuracy, get on a course with narrow tree lined fairway and bunkers at driving range with OB to the right and a pond down the left and heavy rough down the sides you will soon realise just how good or bad your 280 yds is! lol

I wish......

I have a fair swing and decent consistency.....but with a paltry 95 mph, 280 is impossible.
