One of the other posts got me thinking about this.

Back in the mid 70's when i was a cub scout I used to hate Bob-a-Job week.

It should have been called Slave Labour Week.

I remember one time cutting some old geysers back lawn. Before I could even use the mower (a hand push job) I had to cut the grass with a scythe. It was like the rough from this years US Open at Erin Hills. Took me absolutely ages to finish and i don't think he paid me much more then the "advertised bob". (That's 5 pence to you youngsters).

Do the Cubs still do this, or has the PC brigade put a stop to it?

My lads left the scouts some twenty years ago and I don't recollect them having to 'bob a job'...
Wifey was a leader for a number of years also and she doesn't recall having been involved...
Think a car wash day, a couple of times a year, was about it...

Don't think they do jumbles locally either, due to the competition for jumble...

You would need a CRB to employ children now I think.
Would need to pay the minimum wage.

I used to earn good pocket money washing the neighbours cars in the early 1970s
dont see kids doing that now except children in need etc.

Think I would rather my time than kids now.

I remember doing it. Hated it. So did the neighbours who got irritated by lots of scouts knocking on their doors. You couldn't do it now, far too many safety issues.

I did it. Wasn't a great fan - but felt I had to - so I did. Some folks were generous and didn't need ask me to do much - others had me doing such as weeding 100yds of path...:(

Truth is in the end I took a bit of pride in trying to raise the most - even though I didn't much like doing it.

I'm a Scout Leader and used to do this when I was a lad.
It got killed off in 1992 when the health n safety mob took over.

It sort of got relaunched in 2012 as "Scout Community Week" but now it involves the whole troop doing one project, rather than lots of little individual ones.which tends to limit its profile in the local area

One reason for this is Scouts are now aged 10-14 compared to 11-16 when I was a lad.

i can remeber doing the same job cutting a guys front garden with a scythe. Don't think it had ever been sharpened. The fat lazy sod ( Jerry) sat in his front room on a Sunday afternoon drinking himself stupid on a "party four ", (a large can, that held four pints which had to be opened with a triangle shaped can opener). He then started on a second can. I had blisters on blisters. Got about a third of it done. Went for me tea and never went back.
It was deffo not Bob a job week though. I was in the Cubs initially then went onto the SJAB. Rising to thanks of Divisional superintendent.
