Yup I know it's a golf forum, but anyone had a BMW 320 diese 2010 plate. My lad took me to pick Missis T's car up the other week and it was shaking like a dog when it pulled off in first. I asked him what was up with it and he was oblivious to owt.
I drove it back from the garage today, the mechanic gave it a service and said the clutch is going ( mentioned double summat or other clutch related).
Anyway I picked it up today and drove it home, when lifting the clutch in first it sounds and feels juddery. Lad rang me last week saying he's struggling to get it in first. hmmm coincidence, coz before that he had not noticed owt. Mechanic says it will be about £540 to do it. Anyone else had a prob with BMW clutches.
cheers me dears.

I had a 320 coupe (2008 E92) for 6 years and never an issue, same clutch 60000 miles later.
Sounds like a definite clutch issue if he is struggling to get it in to gear. Best case its the release bearing (sadly unlikely), moderate case its just the clutch and worst case its the dual mass flywheel.
I will be honest, £540 sounds a bit cheap if its the DMF as part alone will run you about £500.

Juddery sounds sadly like its flywheel related.

The double thing I/he mentioned was the dual mass flywheel. The price he gave was for doing the dmf. I have to pick him up tonight from the airport so I will have a natter with him. Cheers GIF.

If the price is for the DMF make sure he is doing the clutch as well. LUK do a full kit for about £420 trade so he might be giing with that.
BMW OEM DMF is £580 trade alone.
Sounds a good price if its the whole lot getting done, especially as its about a 5 hour job.

That's probably why it was a good idea for me to ask on here, I thougt the DMF was the clutch 😳 When I get my lad to talk to him which could end up being me I will ask him. He has done work on our cars for years so we do trust him. Many many thanks me man

No worries. The DMF is a pain in the arse in most diesels, replaced the one on my Alfa GT with a solid flywheel that was custom converted.
Its really just to stabilise the torque that diesel engines produce but to be honest I hardly noticed the difference with the custom job.
The actual clutch plate and cover are same as always and the release bearing can usually be bought as part of the overall kit.

Odd you ahould mention a solid flywheel i was playin on the net a couple of hours ago and it was mentioned about solid flywheels.

Had my DMF and clutch done last year on a 58 Volvo V50 - £650 all in on "mates rates" which I was well impressed with as the parts alone would have cost me almost that much.

If you are having either of them done, it's worth getting the other done at the same time, purely down to the labour costs of doing the job.

Have sold both DM & Solid for VW,Skoda , Audi etc , tend to vere ppl away from solid to be honest , end of day its customers money but to me the feeling in the pedal is just not same

My lad has spoken to the warranty people and apparantly it is protected, he can pay for it to be done and then claim back money or take it to halfords and they will do it.

Pay and claim. Dont let Halfrauds loose on it. My mate had his Abarth clutch done there stupidly a few years back. Totally misaligned, then tried to blame his driving...

Had exactly same issue with my Audi A6 c7. Took it in and Audi whipped it out and replaced it under the good will gesture. Still get a bit of clutch judder now and then, even though new clutch only has about 10k on it.

Slight bit of over revving usually cures it. Not to much it annoys me but just enough that I can cope with it.

Well well well, it seems like he has read the small print wrong and is not covered under the warranty unless they open it up and find something untoward. In which case take photos and and them off to the RAC.
Halfords wanted 200-300£ to have a look and if it's not under warranty £973. For the DMF.
An independent BMW specialist has quoted £975 for the DMF and clutch. So it's going there.

My first car had a similar issue. All these parts are sold as module these days so you have to buy the whole thing new rather than just fix the problem with the one you had.

Mine was the clutch housing coming loose, clutch was fine but housing was not fixable.

Cars are way more expensive than golf! I just can't bring myself to spend unnecessary money on cars.

This isnt strictly true, while many parts hsve become modular like sensor arrays or items like DIS Packs, clutch assemblies are usually sold as kits rather than module. Most kits are 3 separate parts; clutch case, clutch plate and release bearing. Each of these can be bought separately and most manufacturers will have separate part numbers for each with a part number for the complete kit as well.
If the case on yours came loose, its very lucky that the plate wasnt damaged as the case holds the plate in place when its not on the spline.
