Played in the midweek comp at the club today, lovely sunny day and only a gentle breeze, if a bit damp underfoot in places.

Came off the 11th 1 over gross and ripped one up the par 5 12th leaving me a long iron to the green. Following 40 minutes or so of complete implosion I walked off the 15th green 10 over !!!! having completely lost the plot (mainly with wedge in hand). I mean really, is it possible to combust that badly.

Have spent a lot of time the last few weeks on the short game and really frustrated the first time I put it under the pump in a competitve scenario that negative thoughts and a lack of conviction saw me back where it was before - many more hours to be spent on the practise ground it seems :(

Feels better to get that off the chest :)

I feel for you Fundy, been there many times myself. I can't remember the numbers exactly but last year I was level gross standing on the 10th tee and walked off 18 at thirteen over. My short game and putting completely imploded when I started thinking about my score.

You just have to make sure you are honest about where it went wrong and try to lern from the experience. Better luck next time

In simple terms, yes!

i was in the same position last year. got on our 10th tee and i had 23 points on the card, at the time i was off 14/15 so would have been around +1/+2 but more importantly was net -5 for HC, joking around said " dont worry i'll throw it away "

double, triple, double, no score follwed on 10/11/12/13, i walked 14th, 15th & 16th before playing 17 & 18 in par par finish.

It's almost worse when you're obviously a decent player. No offence to the higher handicappers, but vhey're kind of expected to have a few shockers - that's generally why they're high handicapper.
It's remarkably easy to screw up. Easier than playing well - I should know at the moment...

Don't doubt yourself Steve, you know you're a better player than that score suggests, keep at it and it will come.

Either that or you can let your trolley run into another bunker and complete a really crap day..

Cheers guys, youve cheered me up, think I just needed to vent.

I have a decent trolley these days Ian, it evens manages to stay out of the bunkers unlike the motocaddy lol :p

I know it was just one of those things but do need to strengthen my mental side, especially on the short game, the fundamentals are getting better but need to improve the thought process with it

Wouldn't normally make a suggestion to a player that is clearly alot beeter than me but have you tried the Bob Rotella books? If its a rubbish suggestion then blame Homer as it was him who mentioned it to me. Played today putting everything i have learnt from the book into practise and i cant tell you how much it has hepled.

I seem to combust pretty much every time there is a card in my hand. One day I may be reincarnated as a golfer

Standing +6 gross on and finishing 6, 6, 6 (double triple, single bogey) and then three days later on the same tee +5 gross and repeating the trick would say, yes, it's easy to do. Event he top players can have a horror finish from nowhere so focus on the good play for 9 holes, forget the rest and maybe get out and tame the wedge

Used to happen to me - for 3 holes!
Apart from not getting in a good position at all recently, my attitude is much more 'this shot' focussed so bad shots don't end in disasters.

re OP. So much emphasis on shor game recently may mean you are thinking too much about technique when you get to wedge distance. Perhaps time to relax - lose the tension - and trust you technique, rather than getting into 'range mode on the course' which can indeed cause all sorts of problems.

Well done on getting into a position where you could score well btw! Great feckin game ain't it!
