Blocking air bricks?

We've got two of these high up on wall of living room (20.year old house)
Internally builder had put cheap plastic grilles which we replaced with nicer brass sliding vents.
There is a gas fire in the room (rarely used) and there were NO trickle vents above windows.
Replacement windows DO have trickle vents.

Brass vents are always closed but are very dominant.
I'd like to remove them when we next decorate but I'm worried I might kill us all!

Changed the gas fire for a balanced flue one and block the vents. I did the simpler thing removed a gas fire which had only been used twice in 25 years.

Would you need it if it was a wood burning stove instead of a gas one?
