My 11 year old son starts secondary school tomorrow, so I wanted a special day today. He plays on the par 3 course with me, and has had a couple of pars there. So today we ventured out on the big course, and hired a buggy to make it fun (it's a long way when you're less than 5 feet tall, even off the red tees!). He managed a couple of 6's and a 7 amongst the 10's, but his smiling face when he nailed a couple was all I needed. Except the bugger missed me chipping in for birdie when he was moving the buggy on the 16th! I wish I'd started that young!

Glad you had a good day. I remember my first time vividly on a proper course (see last months GM) but never had the luxury of buggies in my day. My shoulder really knew about carrying for 18 holes but it was worth every second of discomfort. Keep encouraging him and makes sure in the years to come that you keep playing together. Time passes by so quickly and there is always something more important to be doing. Make time to play with your son for as long as you are both fit and capable. Wish I had with my dad
