Just wondering how many of you still use blades or have gone back to using them and if so what have you got? When I first started playing that was almost all you could get; now irons come in all shapes and sizes but there appears to be an increase in the number of manufacturers producing blades again. Tiger, Rory and Adam Scott come to mind and they're among the best ball strikers out there.

I've got a combo set of Mizuno MP54's from 3-6 and MP4's 7-PW and prefer the MP4's.
I've also got a set of Titleist 690.mb's 3-PW.

great clubs and a joy to hit as are most Titleist blades, I've had a few plus Mizuno blades as well. If you have a decent swing anyone can hit blades. If you have a bad swing you cant hit anything well.

Never used blades - tried them and found I got nothing more from them

Ali manufactures have never stopped making blades - always been able to buy them - not sure which irons are on sale now that never used to be i regards blades

And some pros have always used blades and some have used other types

Westwood for example who is reputed to be one of the best ball strikers around uses I20's

Zach Johnson has Ap2s on certain irons

It will always be what is best suited for each individual player

I use John Letters F-7 blades (limited edition getting JL clubs back on the market - and so they were very attractively priced - not quite 'pure' blades). Love them - and love feeling the improvement in my ball striking this summer that has come about through my swing reconstruction.

he even has an AP1 4 iron. I tried that and the I20's and i25's, it felt like cheating they were that easy to strike- hated the offset though.
When the fat lady has sung at the end of the day, it all boils down to what suits you and your eye, if it works for you and its legal then happy days

I noticed that Srixon will be introducing a pure blade as part of it's line up. I maybe wrong but I don't think they have done since their old Pro100's about 10 years ago! Also a fair percentage of the smaller manufacturers ranges are blades, thinking Miura, Vega, Scratch etc.

I love the look of a bladed club. I had a wee set of junior irons when I was a kid and they were blades. When I got a grown up set they were shovels. The next set of irons I bought when I got a membership were Nike pro combos. I feel on love with the bladed short irons.

Currently own

Nike pro combos
Titleist 690mb
Titleist 69mb.
Mizuno Mp 33

Thinking of adding 5 6 & 7 ap irons though. They should launch the ball that bit easier.

Some great clubs there!

Once upon a time I used to play with blade clubs, because that was pretty much all you could get. The smaller heads mean it is easier to shank the ball and balls hit off the toe go nowhere and probably right. Give me cavity backs any time. :)

I've never owned a set of blades and I doubt I ever will. If I could afford another set of clubs I'd buy a set of Titleist MBs because they look fabulous.

I love blades but why make the game harder?

I switched from MP 32 and 62 to some GI irons and they are so much easier to hit. which makes a real difference on days your swing is off. only downside to the GI irons ive found is the delicate bump and runs and chips with the GI are harder to control due to the hot faces. So thinking of going to a split set next year of MP H5 in 3-7 and MP4 in 8,9,PW.

i won't play anything other then blades, I own 4 sets, Sounder SB IV, Titleist 690mb, Snake eyes 695b, and now Wishon 555m.
The Wishons are the best looking blade I've seen, but the Snake eyes are the best feeling clubs to date, the Titleist are the worst.

I had a set of MP32's and thought they were truly excellent. So much so in fact I often check in on eBay to see if there is a cheap 2-W set going :D

Having said that, I wouldn't move away from my MP63's. Love them to pieces. I find they give me the best compromise between a blade and something a touch more forgiving.

Had a set of Dunlop Maxfli Australian blades as a youngster. Lovely club. Also had a set of Ben Sayers "Ray Floyd" which although as not as well known as the Dunlop's they were also a joy to hit. These days I need the help of a cavity back big time and wouldn't dream of playing a blade although the Nike Pro Combo range (last incarnation) with the bladed 8-PW were enticing

Blades will always divide people, between those who grew up with them and those who grew up with GI clubs.

My first proper set of clubs were a set of Mizuno Pro Originals, from the mid 80s. Now they were a real blade. Later had MP Originals, MP19, MP33 and a few others up until the current MP4s. Tended to go blade then something more helpful, then back to blade and so on. Even had a 2 iron back in the day.

In my opinion, modern blades are easier to hit, partly because they have more tech and different weighting, and slightly larger blade size, but also due to the shafts which better complement them for average players. If you hot one well, you will probably hit it as far as a GI club, but if you miss one, you will notice the difference.

I wouldn't put off any half decent player from trying them, although a full commitment needs good fitting. A good half way option may be a combo set, with a few blades in the short irons, then something like a MP54 or MPH5 in the longer irons. Most of the major manufacturers will sell you a combo set and these days the ranges are designed to be mixed up.

My biggest regret is getting the JPX Pro 825. Don't get me wrong, they are a beautiful club to hit, but I miss my MP33s. I loves the 2i and do miss it on a windy day when I want to keep it under the wind. Should have stuck with what I was looking at to start off with, MP4 or TItleist blades.
