The thread about visitors & tees made me think about the way I like to play.

I can hit a good drive around 250, probably average around 220, which isn't bad for my advanced age. On proper championship style courses a lot of holes are designed with a specific landing zone & if you're too short to reach it you can't play the proper second shot. Also, greens are often designed to receive a particular kind of shot, so if you're hitting a hybrid into a green designed for a 9 iron or wedge, or can't reach at all then I think you're playing off the wrong tee.

Some of my friends insist on playing this type of course off the whites and they all finish up hitting woods, or not getting up on 440 yard plus par fours and long par 3s.

If I play a "championship" course I want to be hitting the type of second shots the course is designed for, and if that means playing off the yellow tees, that's what I want to do. Anyone else feel this way?

Once I have to play off the reds, I'll give up.

Don't bothered either way - happy to play of any tee

What tee I play from will never define my enjoyment of the round

I tend to still gravitate towards the back tee's if possible, no particular reason other than habit, however I guess my time is coming to an end as I have started to notice women opening doors for me and my nuisance calls are all from Saga

Can't see anything wrong with playing off whichever tee suits you that day, if that's the yellows crack on. If you're going to fork out for playing on a Championship course I'd think you'd want to enjoy it. And if others are insisting on playing off the whites but really can't play the course how it was designed from back there I'd suggest they're not getting the most out of the experience.

Re the question, I'll leave that up to you to guess :)

Must admit I hate when i have looked forward to playing one of the bigger courses and they set us off real forward tee's and its drives and short irons in most of the time .

What are these black tees ?;) We only have white, yellow, red, and some very forward blue ones. I think the blue ones are for when Smiffy visits.

Must admit I like to play off whites, as that is what members always play off at my Club (assuming they want to ) Played off the whites at Sunningdale and The Berkshire (The Berkshire was by mistake, as the rest of my Society played off the yellows ) When you are paying £100 for the round, it is nice to play the full course.

Don't think I would want to play Bearwood Lakes or Hankley Common off the blacks. In fact I am sure as I wouldn't reach many fairways.:o

Pretty much agree with Richart. I want to play a course at the full length especially if I'm paying decent money to do so. I played the Forest of Arden off the whites and that had six par 4's over 400 hundred yards and four over 420 yards which are out of my reach unless I hit two out of the screws. I laid up on purpose and pitched and two putted (one putted one of them) and was ahead of the card for these holes. I did much the same at H4H at West Hill and North Hants. I get shots so why gamble with a mis-hit into the heather when I can pitch from the fairway and try and get close

Perhaps Duncan or the other experts may help here.
I believe that a mans course can only have two measured courses [tees] for competition purposes and the only clubs who can have blue tees are clubs who have hosted a national championship off those tees.

Perhaps things have changed in the last 10 years.

we've got blue tee, but then we have hosted several Championships and a Walker cup.

You can play off the whites at Nairn if you want, i also believe that if you have the ability you should be able to play off the blues. only downside is if you get everyone using the longer tee's it slows the course right up

we have yellow at 6250 whites @6618 and blue at 6850. I prefer the whites but my regular PP the yellows,

The CONGU recommendations are for 5 sets of tees ranging from Championship down to Forward with the colours in descending order black, white, yellow, red, green/blue

Our Secretary attended a meeting a while back and came away with the fact that the equivalent of the tour pro course, for us mere mortals, we should play at our place, off the yellows, in comps and mid week ones are now often off those tees

Isn't this where everyone is different. It really pee's me off to be unable to reach with a drive & an iron holes where I could previously play that way. And I think a lot of "championship" courses are just not designed for the majority of golfers. What's the point of that?

I agree with the OP. go with the tees that suit your game.
A couple of years ago the USGA had a campaign called "Tee It Forward" where they encouraged players to play from the tees according to their ability. they were concerned that too many golfers felt that they had to go off the back tees and as a result the game became too difficult and less enjoyable and contributed to the decline in the game.

I've read this a few times and don't get it!?

I'm not too bothered, will play any course off any tees and still enjoy it.

But surely if it a proper Championship course the back tee;s are for a Championship of some sort and not general play?
