black magic hybrid wedge

Thread resurrection alert!

Does anyone know if you can pick these up in the UK? I think my dad would really like it... and secretly I'd love to give it a try.

No idea Mab, but this was my face when I look at their website

is it not just a chipper?

No - it's not a chipper at all.

I believe they sell a variety of lofts from PW through to LW. They can be used for full swings... so I believe from, say, 130 yards out.

The reason I think they would be useful is for winter play in the uk. A few of the courses I and my dad play have poor drainage which makes lofted touch shots (from what could almost be considered standing water) around the green rather difficult. I imagine the sole would reduce the likelihood of a heavy / fat shots.

My mate uses an Adams set of hybrid irons and i think they are all hybrids from 5 down to pw.

I think they are called V4's?

Thanks - I've seen these but I believe they only go up to PW / GW and the sole is subtly different. Ideally I'd be looking for a 60* LW version...

Clearly designed for the american market so people can play the wrong shot slightly less badly.

No need for such a club in the UK, we just don't have the courses for them. Better to just throw in a 9 iron low and spinny based on good technique.

A 9 iron is perfect around the green no need for a wedge

Sorry guys - you've completely misunderstood where I think this club would be of use.

You've missed the green, you have 30 feet to the pin and the green is 5-10 feet higher than your ball. The lie is soggy, you have 5 feet of grass, then 20 feet of bunker and the pin is 5 feet on. In this situation, a 9 iron simply would not get you close so you reach for the 60* LW. Problem is that the soggy lie leaves you highly susceptible to poor contact and even fatting the shot.

In this situation, I imagine the rather rotund sole would be interesting to try from that lie.

Ben Hogan Sure Out wedge works well for these shots. And also works well out of sand or elsewhere for the rest of the year.

There's an argument, that I'm inclined to agree with, that you shouldn't be on the course if conditions are like you describe!
