After several months of playing at my home club (which is a very short 9 hole course) I played at a lovely course in Cheshire called Brookfield. I was invited to join a group of seniors who were fantastic company and pointed out one or two fundamental faults i have probably always had.

My driving was ok, but it seems i have completely lost the knack of the second fairway shot. on the plus side my short game was fine, as the course i play at is excellent for honing that.
My alignment was all over the place, and I duffed far too many to be honest.

Its time to invest in lessons isnt it?

Re: Bit disheartened aftre todays game

I know what you mean. I went out today and after the joy of finishing 2nd in the medal and getting cut to 11 and helping to empty Smiffy's wallet yesterday I just couldn't get into it. My timing was off and I was spraying it all over the place. I couldn't get into it at all and was basically just hitting it on each hole with little thought and even less control over the swing.

Even though I'm off all week I'm not playing tomorrow and having a break. That said I'm of to a TM demo day to try out the TP's and maybe a fairway wood too so not a golf free day entirely

well if it happens to experienced guys like you, then i feel a bit better.
It was a brand new course to me so i had no idea where some of teh greens were, distances alien....i didnt take my FreeCaddie with me....so there are extenuating circumstances.

But i still played like Harrington too often

Yesterdays 38 pointer is todays 24.
I played on Thursday, felt I played like an absolute knob but scored 33 points with 3 blobs.
Went out on Sunday, felt I was hitting the ball better and was a bit happier with my game. Result? 30 points.
Doesn't make sense this game.
Just when you think you've cracked it, it goes away. And when you think you're game has deserted you for ever, 38 points come your way and all's right with the world.
It'll come back.

The first dtep to solving a problem is acceptance,so your already on the right road.

Same place as me my dear friend. I had my first lesson the other week and though the pro said I have the making of an excellent swing and I am a great striker of the ball  my grip and no hand change over is causing my faults.... So I have cancelled my comp on Saturday and intend to practice until my new swing is in full... swing, then I hope my hcp will drop faster than a tarts knickers.

I also had a lesson yesterday, as i had not played in some time. My fault was in the first part of the takeawy - club head too far inside the line and clubface too open. He gave me a drill to cure this, and I started hitting some cracking shots - ball flying dead straight .

I shall be at the range tonight to practice it further. Hopefully it will not prove to be a localized phenomenom (my lesson was at a club near work, not where I normally play), and then I shall take it out onto the course on Saturday.

MarkS i know what you mean

I play on a short par 3 and 4 9 hole course with our longest hole at 350 yards. This is great to hone your short game and short- mid irons it doesn't really give you a proper expiernce of long par 4s and 3 shot par 5s. This means when i go to other courses i struggle to play to my handicap.

Looks like its more lessons for me as well :(

where is your course matey?

I seem to know the feeling of playing excellent and then down right dreadful very well, but a word of warning. Having been down to a H'Cap of 7, and now playing to scores of between + 16 and + 22 most rounds seem very disheartening at the moment. I'd love to go back to having some excelent days inbetween the poor.
Good job for the social side of the game!!!

Played today with a guy who won the EGU Gold Medal tournament in 2007 as shown on Sky. Haven't played with him since he won at Woodhull Spa when he was off 19. He's off 10 now and playing to it with ease. He struck the ball really well today and even though his shortgame and putting were off he was still to hot for me and duffed my 3&1. That said I had a shocking round and drove the ball as badly as I can remember. I really need to work on it at the range tomorrow. Its so bad I'm even taking the Cleveland Hi-Bore XLS (10.5 draw bias) out of retirement and seeing how I hit that
