Englishman's 414yd hit wins world long-drive title

Jamie Sadlowski, the two-time defending Re/Max World Long Drive champion, has been beaten in the semi-finals by England's Joe Miller, who went on to win the 2010 Re/Max in Mesquite, Nevada.
Sadlowski could only manage a 388yd drive :o in his semi-final with Miller, whose 396-yard drive knocked out the 22-year-old sensation from Alberta, Canada.

Miller, one of the top hitters in Europe, then went on to beat Domenic Mazza in the final with a 414yd smash that easily bested Mazza's 371-yard effort.

Sadlowski, whose relatively small size (5-11, 168 pounds) is rare in the sport, saw a few dangerous competitors fail to make the elite eight.

The quarter-finals featured neither Jason Zuback, a former amateur powerlifter from Alberta, Canada, who has won the title a record five times, nor Mike Dobbyn, a 6-8, 300lb mountain of a man who was the last person other than Sadlowski to win the Re/Max, in 2007.

That Sadlowski then failed to make the final two was perhaps the biggest shock of all. He is the youngest hitter to achieve stardom on the long-drive circuit, but he has maintained his titles are no sure thing.

Wind and temperature are huge factors in this event, which annually draws in excess of 10,000 competitors who attempt to qualify for the finals.

Temperatures were in the mid-70s with no wind.
The competition will air on ESPN2 at 2 p.m. ET USA on Christmas Day, and on ESPN at 2:30 p.m. on December 26.

Actually it's more of a "Twang" than a "Ping", I find.

Note to self. My knees are for praying, not for snapping.

I dunno. I think it's worth a regrip, at least! You never know when that would come in handy off an uphill lie.

Actually, I'm sitting here waiting for my new Cleveland CG10 56 degree arriving via eBay. At least it was only £20 incl, postage. One day I'll learn.

I've seen some of these long hitting events on the lamented Golf Channel UK while it was transmitting and to be honest a lot of them arent that much further than long tour pros although in this case he is a bit of a monster. At least we spanked the yanks again

I went to watch the European Championships at Close House last year and into a cold wind they were still hitting it 330 metres. They had, i think, 5 or 6 shots each and they had to hit it pretty straight. Most hit a couple tops and a couple miles offline but the odd straight one counted. I felt that in those conditions a good drive for myself would be about 215 to 230 yards at the very best. Johan Tumba, if you can remember him (and if i've spelt his name right), won the senior section with about 330 metres. I left before the main finals were played out, it was far too cold to be sitting in a grandstand.
These guys have some very impressive swing speeds.

I could beat 414 yards .... If I could use a runway at Glasgow Airport ;)

I'd put money on that. I think you could do it easy.

I'm trying to picture a 414 yard hole.....I think our S.I. 1 is going to be extended to 430 from 410. That's a drive ON the green (off the old tee) and just short off the new.
Monster. :D

Great to see an Englishman at the top, so now we're the longest and we've got the number one golfer in the world.

They are way longer than tour pros, Jamie Sadlowski's clubhead speed is 145mph. I saw a little video the other day about a 16 year old called Domenic Mazza who entered this years event, one of his drives was around 425 yards. He's not a bad golfer he plays off 2.

Are you sure you could squeeze one out that far Charles???? Maybe if the wind changed to behind you i could believe that :D
