I played 36 holes on Friday and shot +5 for the first 18 and +8 for the second lap

I had much better control of the ball on the second lap but had a worse score

I'd much rather have good ball striking but as we all know there are no pictures on a scorecard

which do you prefer?

Better ball striking for me. Unless you're playing for money, surely you will get more enjoyment out of playing a nicer game.

Better ball striking all day long- do this and the scores will come, do it not and you'll never improve or have the potential of a really low score.

ball striking for me. Once that improves then scores will also improve in time. Although 40+ points in tomorrows stableford while playing crap would be well received :p

Join the club. If I could sort me Driving out then my handicap would reduce further. As it is I just spend to much time off the fairway.

Yep, for a high handicapper i reckon my short game is at a decent standard. Once i start hitting fairways ill be well on my way. I dont play golf for the first couple of hundred yards, more....rough jumping.

This is the correct answer and if you can improve or constantly hit it well the scores will come, a one off good score might get you a cut but you will soon get the .1's back if you can't hit the ball.

Mind you if you get a 3 shot buffer then the cuts should come very hard and fast if you can focus on your game.

I play to 8 but have shot under par rounds before but that is when I drive the ball well. I just cannot do it consistently. I have had video analysis, 1 to 1 coaching you name it and they have shown up a variety of faults. I fix one and another has crept in yet whatever the fault is I hit it straight Right no slice just dead straight Right into the clag when usually leads to a dropped shot. It has me raging at times

Exact thing i do mate, especially after i get frustrated or later into a round. Straight right, 3 fairways across. That or i fly over the top of it and send it 10 feet infront of me, lol. Most annoying thing is ye know you can do it, that its in the bag, but it just wont happen when ye want it.

:) No I do not top it or thin it which is even more annoying at times as I always get a decent strike on it but the old swing faults creep in. 3 Wood no problem but as I am not a long hitter Driver is a necessary evil on some holes if I want to make par as the green is out of reach for me sometimes with the wood. Even tried different shafts in my Driver, I have 2 spare D2 driver shafts as well now.

Possibly posture/angles related, have a look at this, might help http://www.mytpi.com/improve-my-game/swing-characteristics/loss-of-posture

It's oddly satisfying making a score when you think you're swinging bad, but ball striking for me all day long.

I buffered today and thought I was rubbish. My mood would be better hitting well, regardless of whether or not I scored better.
