Hello all.I am getting mixed advice from people as to the best way to hit hybrid clubs. One camp say all long irons and hybrids should be hit like fairway woods with a sweeping action, the other camp say the ball must be compressed like a normal iron shot. What do you think? Cheers.

Move the ball up & back in your stance until you are getting the best results. You are brewing trouble for yourself if you are thinking "iron swing" or "wood swing"

Hit a driver off the deck from the middle of your stance and you'll be hitting little divots.

Just hit the bloody thing man!

Let the club do the work.

Simples.

They look like woods but are meant to be played like long irons - i.e. with a very slight descending blow imo.

Mine is like is a 5 iron equiv so I play it where I would my 5 iron. I do hit down on it for best results, it gets the ball spinning more and keeps it in the air longer.

The swing should nearly always stay the same for full shots and only the angle of attack should alter.
Off a reasonable lie a sweeping or very slightly descending contact would be the way I would go but that does depend on the loft of the club resulting in a flattening of the grass with little or no divot, a bit like a long iron.
I like the replies that say “ hold the end with the rubber grip and swing the thing” as if that helps, are you shore this isn’t an angling site?

I kept on topping it and was told to sweep away low, it works most of the time except when I realy need to hit a cracker.

Aaaargh! So far some say sweep, some say downward blow, and some are sarcastic! Do you see my problem! I guess i will try both methods at the range and see which works best for me.Thanks to all serious posters, cheers, this forum can be a real help for us beginners.

Robo's got the right advice here. Move the ball about until you find a position that works for you. We all swing differently so don't just do what someone else does. Have a play and you'll find a way of hitting it well.

I cant tell you how to hit it, but I have one good tip to avoid topping it and promote a nice smooth swing. You will be using it a lot off the fairway on long par 4s and 5s, just try widenning your stance a little extra, with a nice even weight distribution so you feel very firmly planted and take it back quite low and swing smoothly. Try this on the range and don't give yourself too much to think about with the hitting down/sweeping dilemma. Just get the feel for striking it cleanly without trying anything complicated.

With a slight descending blow. ALL clubs should be hit descending, you can even hit your driver descending... but I wouldn't recommend more than 1° descending with a driver, 0° would be perfect with a driver and the clubface does the rest.

With every shot you hit your clubs GRIP should lead the way and be AHEAD of the clubface at impact, that way your swing bottoms out in FRONT of the ball and you take a slight divot.

Out of interest..How do you propose to hit it upwards? Lean back on it and fat it? :D You'll actually block or slice the life out of it if you do that, if you don't fat it of course!

I've answered as seriously as I can, don't even THINK of trying something else, just do it properly.

Hope that helps.
