As posted already i've just re-taken golf up, i have never been any good but this time i want to work at it.

what i want to know is whats the best type of lesson to have, my local driving range has normal 30 min ones but at another range 20 mins out of town they are offering vidoe instruction??

your kind feedback would be welcome

In my view the best type of lesson is a video one so you can actually see your faults. Hopefully once the pro has worked his magic you can then see how you have improved and take that image away with you

I wouldn’t waste your money by having a video lesson every time, I have a video lesson about every other month, a normal lesson with a pro is fine the majority of the time and cheaper.

See the pro to discusss a course of lessons - one will never be enough, and in the long run a course should be cheaper. This should include at least one video session.

Shaun,

I can't recommend the video lessons highly enough. Unless you've seen what your swing looks like, you often don't believe a thing the pro is telling you. They're a revelation.

Try some to start with (maybe 4 x 1 hour lessons) and then work down to half hour lessons.

Depends if you are a 'visual' person. Some people learn more by 'feel', some get very 'technical' speak, some like 'visual', just depends on you.

My wife is hopeless with visual, and also with being put in correct positions. Let her hit a good one, and she can reproduce it by feel.

Every one is different.

Video can be scary.

Murph,

VERY good point. Never thought about that.

I'm a bit like your wife, then. I find that I actually learn best by feel, usually though drills which give a certain feeling to my swing.

But I like to have those feelings confirmed by actually seeing where they are putting the club. I guess it's insecurity!

For what its worth i have video lessons and they have really helped me. I enjoy watching the difference in my swing from the first lesson to now. To see how far i have come. Although when i hit my driver under the ball, sending it crashing into the ceiling, and the pros from the other booths all came over for an action replay - not so great :(

Got a 2 hour intensive lesson booked mid Jan with Paul Foston (one of the 25 top GM coaches) in the depths of Kent. It's a first for me and looking forward to it. Will let you know how it goes.

I had video lessons in the early days when video meant more outside broadcast cameras!

My pro showed me what he didn't like and we went from there. He got me down from 24 to 9.

I had a few traditional lessons (where the pro works "off the ball" watching the flight and direction.) Never did so well with these.
